Tracker 2 inch 44 mag
« on: March 05, 2008, 08:06:03 AM »
I was up in Sharon, PA last weekend and saw this SS Tracker 2 inch at a gun shop.  Medium frame, 5 shot, 44 Mag.  Ported barrel with fiber optic front sight.  $460 as I remember.  Now I have been looking for a S&W 696 for a long time.  I carry 24/7 and have wanted one to use as my every day CW.  Can't find one for sale.   :'(  But this Tracker fit my hand very well! (small hands)  And I could load it to 44 Spl. levels.  They ain't much a 240 odd grain Keith style bullet at 900 +/- fps won't do that needs doin'.  ;)

I don't see this version (I don't remember the actual model number) listed on the Taurus site.  Is it one of their discontinued models?  Anyone got any experience with the 2" Trackers?  I'm hesitant about a Taurus because in my youth they weren't very well thought of and I don't want to trust my well being to a weapon I don't have 100% faith in.  I already know what brother GB will say!   ;D  I've got to go back to PA this weekend and can arrange to have it shipped to my FFL here in Jawja if:  I can get it at what y'all think is a decent price and if y'all don't think the downsides of that particular weapon are too serious!

I have one and love it! It has been my "Woods, Backpacking" gun for a few years now.
I got mine used a few years ago and I'm thinking I paid around $300.00

$300.00?  I would of bought a couple!.  Most of the stainless trackers I have seen are going between $400 and $450.  Those are the 4" though.  I do believe that the 2" is discontinued.  I don't think that $460 is a great price, but I also don't think you would be getting ripped off either, you could still try and talk him down 30 or 40 bucks on it.

All said and done with shipping and FFL fees, this one would be around $425 or so most likely.

Hey Bill!
That's the one I saw!  Give me your opinion: accuracy, recoil, muzzle blast, (remember I'd be loading it to warm 44 Spl. levels but I'm also curious about how it acts with full power 44 Mag. loads) ease of carry/conceilability, any concerns with the quality of workmanship?

<snip> I do believe that the 2" is discontinued.

That's my understanding also.  Looking at their web site they seem to have discontinued every revolver that fits my desires!  Medium framed 44 Spls and 45 (Long) Colts!  I'd love to get a 2.5 or 3 inch 45 Colt!

After looking at that link you gave me I'd tend to agree!  Thanks BTW, Armed with the info from y'all I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they have in stock!

I love it, it has stood up very well to hot loads. As for workmanship let me put it this way....
I collect Smith & Wesson handguns so I know a thing or two about quality, and this Taurus is very well made. My old woods gun was a S&W 28 that I retired when I got the Taurus. I also have one in .41 Mag that I just couldn't pass up.
There are a few for sale right now on Gunbroker.com and I have seen them put up in local shops and Gander Mountain. They have ranged in price from 400 to 475.
As for recoil the "Ribber Grips" do a nice job of taming that, it is loud because of the porting on the short barrel, but it won't make your ears bleed.
I have shot 44's out of it and she was a tame puppy with those, I like the stainless for hiking since it's easy to maintain and wipe down after a hot sweaty day of hiking. I'm also on a search and rescue team and if I'm not carrying my Glock the Taurus has been my choice.
If you can find one at a price you can afford I go for it.

Well I ordered that tracker today.  ;D  I'm satisfied with the price, especially after I saw what S&W is charging for their new 44 Spl.!  :o Now I got to get primers, boolets and the time to load and shoot!

Taurus has always been good to me , I won't sit here and say they are the same quality wise as smith & wesson , esp the somewhat older smiths , and I don't think I'd get a taurus for lots of hard heavy use without realizing it may need a tune up down the road "could say the same for the smiths" , but they make alot of different guns people want and provide a fair amount  of service

Picked up the tracker last night.  It's been sitting at my FFL's for a while since I've been out of town.  I'm visually happy with it and the trigger pull is smoother and lighter then the one on the S&W M-49 I've carried for years, uh, decades - to be truthful...  :-\

But, I'm already wondering stuff like "can a pistol smith mill that rear sight hump flat and mount adjustable sights?"  8)

My Midway order is sitting on my doorstep as we type so I'll be happily assembling boolets by this evening!    ;D

then all I'll have to do is find some zombies... ;)

I have one of those as well.  I bought it recently from Whittaker Guns near Owensboro KY.  I was there a few days ago and they had a new one on their counter.  I dont know the price, but probably around $400, maybe a little less.  I picked up a used stainless about 6 months ago.  To hold it in your hands, it is hard to believe you are looking at a 44 magnum.

Mine is a hoot to shoot.   The most powerful load I have fired is the Hornady factory 240 grain hollowpoint.  I like the sight set up just fine.  The fiberoptic sight is easy to pickup from the fixed frame colored rear sight.  Recoil is stout but plenty managable. I have to be careful how I grip it or one of my knuckles gets wacked by the trigger guard.  The fit and finish seems on par with any other pistol I have handled recently.  Mine has functioned flawlessly with about 70 rounds fired by myself.

By no means am I am pistol expert, so my comments on accuracy should be taken with a grain of salt.  I am a terrible shot with a pistol, I was able to qualify with the Beretta while serving as an Air Force SP, but nothing special (I always shot expert when qualifying with the M-16).  If I am careful, both in my hold, and in holding back the urge to flinch, I  can put the bullets where I want them to hit.  At closer ranges, the sights seemed well regulated for windage.  I would not hesitate to go after deer with it (with the right load) out to about 35-40 yards.  More skilled pistol shooters no doubt would be comfortable with longer shots.

I had the same questions about this 2 inch 44 mag not being in the catalog or on the website.  I had seen pictures of them online, but could not find them on any official Taurus publications.  When I found one at Whittaker's I looked at it pretty hard, but frankly did not have to think too long.  It seemed well made, cylinder lockup was tight enough.

As you can tell, I have not shot this off the bench for accuracy.  When I get to a decent range, I will give it a shot.

Recently pick one of these Trackers up in 41mag at a local gun show for $325.. It was used but hardly shot. No tax and only $35 transfer fee. I wanted one in 44mag but could not pass up the deal. It will work for my son who will side holster this on our bear hunt in Idaho later next month.

I'm real happy with mine so far.  Still working on a best load though.  But let me tell you, even though that 5 shot medium frame is nice, I still can't fit it under my suit coat!   :D  As soon as I loose some more of this belly I'm gonna try an inside the pants holster.

You had the same idea I did...what about concealed carry?  I have carried mine a bit, loaded with Cor-Bon 44 specials, but it is really too big.  It is heavy in the pocket, and really too wide (for my tastes) for inside the waistband carry.  That said, in the winter, my favorite coat has a sizeable pocket that allows for relatively easy carry.  No worry about those slugs getting through some bad guys heavy coat.

Hey AtLaw and Xhare. Don't know if you guys are in to fanny packs but they work well on larger revolvers. My 4" S&W Model 28 fits well. I found a REALLY nice one that I liked at Nellis Air Force Base that I liked, but I can remember the name of the manufacturer, but the logo has a jumping fish. That fanny pack was very roomy!!

I have never tried a fanny pack before.  I would have to give it some thought.  I generally like to pocket carry to limit the amount of extra stuff I have to lug around.  But it makes sense for a handgun on the edge of being to big for concealed.

I got the thing, after looking for a M-696 for a long time, because the Medium (S&W L) frame fit my hand much better then an N frame.  Naturally my thought was also to use it as my daily concealed carry weapon.  Heretofore I just stuck my S&W M-49 in my waistband or pocket.  You are right, the Taurus is on the big side (heavy and wide) for concealed carry but I refuse to give up!  The paddle holster I bought makes the revolver stick so far out on the side it is impossible to carry under a suit coat.  So, I'm looking for an inside the waistband holster that will comfortably carry the weight and try that in a cross draw carry.  Maybe like the "Pager Pal" holster that I had.  I've carried a full size automatic in it but the belt attachment is kind of flimsy.  Winter time with a heavy coat isn't a problem, until you have to take the coat off.

True Dat!!!   ;D  I'm still working on the "perfect" load, which I envision as a 240/250 gr. LSW @900-1000 fps, but I may look at those "Gold Dot's" also.   8)

What?  ???
Not to worry mate, I lost my hearing back in the '60's flying in the military.  I keep telling myself It's not that bad but in court today I told a public defender, who had made a completely unwarranted comment earlier, that the next time she did it I was going to say something she wouldn't like.  The judge laughed and said "You'll have to hear what she said first!"  So I guess my secret is not so much of an unknown...   :'(
But I do wear muffs over earplugs now!  'course, the horse is long gone from the barn...  :(

About 2 weeks ago, I got a great deal on one of the Taurus Ultra-Lite Titanium .44Mags.  It's built on the Raging Bull Frame, 4" straight barrel, 29 ozs. unloaded, thick rubber grips with the red shock absorber back strap insert.  I took it to the range on Thursday and quit shooting after 12 mild reloads and 6 full house JHP SD rounds.  It's big, it's light and it kicks like a mule.  Not a range gun, but would be excellent back-up in a survival situation or in big bear country.  It's a great looking piece with excellent fit and finish.  Barrel and frame are a high gloss BLACK coating and the cylinder is a matte grey.  The steel barrel liner stops about 1/4" short of the muzzle - protecting the rifling.  One problem I had was ejecting the high power casings after firing - two cylinder bores wouldn't let them go without some pounding with a cleaning rod - probably too tight and could use a bit of honing.  The 4" barrel provided some spectacular pyrotechnics...nice ball of flame.
Almost forgot, front sight with red fiber optic light pipe and fully adjustable rear sight.

i know you guys are going to go  ew ahhh, but here goes. i have been hot to get an uberti 3" 45colt with a birdshead grip 45 colt. i've handled one and it to me would be a good carry gun and with a 255 gr. lswc more than enough muscle to do the job. dan

I just bought one of these 2" tracker 44s for a backpacking/truck gun.  So far I really like it.  I bought a box of Winchester USA 44 mag ammo and put about 20 rounds downrange before I decided that was enough abuse to my shooting hand.  I went home pulled the rest of them and reloaded them with 8.5 grains of Win 231. Now this load shoots sweeeet.  Accurate, mild and right on target.  I could shoot this load all day.  The factory load was 24 grns of 296. :o

P.S. Warrior, that 3" 45 SAA will serve you well.  I am a cowboy action shooter and it is a well known fact that we can shoot our SAA's just as fast if not faster than an auto.  The 255 grn 45colt will knock a guy off of a horse or you could just shoot the horse.  Soft lead is what gave these guns their knockdown power.

I just bought one of these 2" tracker 44s for a backpacking/truck gun. ...  Now this load shoots sweeeet.  Accurate, mild and right on target.

Okay great!  Someone to compare notes with!   ;D  What do you mean accurate?  Have you measured the throats and slugged the bore?   ???  Mine "patterns" 8 - 12 inches at 25 yards...   >:(  I'm still playing with bullets and loads som maybe it just didn't like the first rounds I put down range.  But the throats measure .428 and the bore 430... thinking about opening the throats up to .431 and finding some bullets sized to 431 but I dunno...  :-\
