Mounting a scope on a .22
« on: March 05, 2008, 04:35:27 PM »
I just picked up a Marlin 925. I really didn't need it, but it was on sale and you know how that is. It has the normal grooves for the tip off rings, but is also drilled and tapped. I would think the bases and rings would be a better mounting system, but can't find which bases it takes. Maybe the groove clamp system would be just as good.

Your 925 should take Weaver #12 mounts.  You can also order mounts directly from Marlin.  I've bought the Marlin factory mounts at Gander Mountain but that was a couple years ago.

You will not find a separate listing for the 925.  Weaver shows the #12 mount for all current 900 series .17 and .22 cal. rifles.

My 917VS had the base mounting holes drilled off center, front ones to the left, rear ones to the right. You could see the scope pointing off to Jones when you laid it in the rings. Found a piece of dowel the right diameter and wrapped emery cloth around it and after a lot of rubbing and trying for fit I got them lined up. I stated my opinion about the whole mess frequenty while doing it too. I tried the mounts that fit the grooves but the lowest I could find were still a little too tall. I don't like to have my head up off the stock when I trying to shoot.

Don't waste your $$$ on the marlin factory bases....they're not too great. Often drilled off center, and obviously of low quality.

#12's will work for ya. Also #46's are sufficient if you're looking for a little extra height. I used the #46's, lapped to my receiver, and a set of LOW leupold rings to find a 40mm objecting on mine....puts the objective down nice and low to the barrel but still enough room for the bolt handle.

I hope you installed the rings you wanted Paflyfisher. I installed a set of Burris Signature Zee rings for a grooved .22 receiver and they seem to work great. With what small amount of experience Ive had with scope rings through the years I will say that it seems that the quality and craftsmanship of the Burris rings was worth the cost I paid for them. Good luck.
