45-100/110/120 dies for .452 bullets
« on: March 05, 2008, 05:54:43 PM »
Looked at a RCBS die chart and noticed that their dies for the 45-90/100/110/120 all use the 45-70 expander, which I would assume means the dies are set up to use .458 bullets.

Would these hold a crimp on a .452 bullet or would i need a special die to load these bullets? I have an expander that would work perfectly but the die set is for a wildcat that has a very thick case at the neck and i doubt it would crimp these cases.

All you can do is try it and see.

You must have an extraordinaryly tight bore and groove diameter barrel to need bullets that small.

An expander plug nominally measures about 0.456"-0.457" to hold a 0.459" bullet.

For your 0.452" bullets, try using the expander from a .45 Colt or .45 ACP die set.  A last resort is to turn and polish your expander plug down to 0.451" diameter.

The seating/crimping die should work for both bullet diameters.  If it does not, try using the sizing die to squeeze the loaded bullet seated part of the round for a tighter bullet assemly.

with the short taper crimp die you can hold small bullets , I shoot mine at 448 wrapped and the 70 crimp die works perfect , the longer one does not though .. don't know why , it just doesn't..............Dean
