Hornady FPB anyone tried these?
« on: March 08, 2008, 05:31:19 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has shot these can't find around here yet. So thought I'd check maybe save some money if they are no good. Looks interesting enough to try though.

Not available yet, probably April or May at the earliest. Although I wouldn't count on them until the third quarter. Lots of companies get the hype and advertising going way before they actually have a product fully developed or a production plan in place.

They do look promising, but we will have to just wait and see. Anything will be better than the PowerBelt IMO.

There is one self proclaimed muzzleloading Guru that has written a preview of them although he hasn't even tested them yet. ::) Talk about getting the cart ahead of the horse. I'll spare you the details.

I was a my local gun shop and he had a couple that he showed me.  I would think that they would be a huge improvement over the powerbelts for guns in states the don't allow sabots.

They'll more than likely be a flop. I believe they are only available in 350 grains and thats it. They fit all MLer bores, right off is a lie.

You're right bigblock.  Horsehocky!  If they will fit some of those tight bore Knights and Thompsons, they'll fall out of my loose bore Mustang.

I look forward to seeing how the TC's do with them  ;D

The only guys i can think of that will have good success are the BPI shooters "cva/winchester" Traditions and NEF. And more than likely the non inline TC's.

I’d like to say that the PowerBelt’s plastic skirt REALLY seals the powder charge with and air-tite/water-tite seal.

With-out this “Sealing” ability, the new FPB may fall short on how long you can leave your gun loaded, before moisture sets in.

Another con is the lack of any 45cal offerings!   >:(

There are thousands of us 45cal shooters, and we would love to see Hornady step up and make at Least one! ;)

10-4 here!
::)  We .45-er's are used to being relegated to 2nd class status at this point which inspires innovation... necessity is the mother of invention after all.  ;)

My .45 will only shoot PRB or Powerbelts.

Us .45 guys are a slim part in muzzleloading. Everyone shoots the .50 inlines.

If the load as easy and shoot as accurate as the powerbelts AND have good penetration, unlike the powerbelts.  They will sell like hotcakes.

I really hope they hold together better than a powerboob, those suckers shoot great in my Omega, but aren't worth a flip when they hit an animal.

Powerbelts are Excellent penetrating bullets when they are not over powdered by massive amounts of powder.

And of course you have already tested this theory of yours. I guess you don't understand the principle of the design. The back is shaped like a cone, they probably start off in the .505"+ arena, once inserted they will swadge down to bore size whether that be .499" or .504". The majority of the bullet is probably in the .500" diameter range, and through obturation will belly out into the grooves.

Lane makes a good point about the seal, that may prove to be a challenge. Some lube in the base or a fiber gasket wad would take care of that worry, but would include an extra step in loading. Those fiber gasket wads will seal anything, but may hinder the obturating properties of the design.

I do know one thing, I have tested several muzzleloader bullets at various ranges, firing into different types of media, the PowerBelts are the King of the WORST. You never know what one is going to do. Why limit yourself to that?

If you look at he new Hornady FPB, they are touted to work at any speed between 800 fps and 2000 fps. This means any load you want to use up to 150 grain charges. I hope they live up to their word, because I know I will surely be putting them through the wringer. I will even do the side by side comparison with a PowerBelt, I already know one bullet isn't up to the task.

Nah Powerbelts just like all bullets have their limits.

People these days think you need 150 grains to shoot deer when they are a stone throw away.

Well I don't think 90 grains of loose regular pyrodex is a massive amount of powder, thats what I was shooting.

I agree with Busta, Powerbelts are like a box of chocolates........

Well from the one box of powerbelts I use for my 45cal encore they worked great. 195grain areo tip pushed by 100grains of T7. This is new and I expect for some other bullet weights and maybe a 45 cal. If by any chance it comes out in a 45cal I will scrap the powerbelts. I have had luck with the Powerbelts though but I don't know what to expect the next time I use them other than the accuracy.

Yeah. I have never had any problems with any ML's except one Traditions. I went through the ML section on that site and any ML that wasn't made in the USA was junk and had problems. I am glad I wasn't here when he was. :D

I tried to order some from the company.  They told me they won't be available until May.  They look promising to me.
