Scope for my 7-30 waters
« on: March 08, 2008, 09:41:01 AM »
I'm putting together my waters 15" custom shop barrel looking for a scope to go on it. Really would like some input from you guys thinking of the bushnell trophy 2-6 any help would be great.

I've used the Leupold 2X, Leupold 4X, Bushnell Elite 2-6, Bushnell Trophy 2-6 and Burris 2-7 all with perfect satisfaction. I do feel the Leupold 2X is a bit shy of magnification for longer shots especially in broken wooded areas. The Leupold 4X is a bit short on FOV to suit me.

The Bushnell scopes like the Leupold 4X are a tad shy of FOV but have still served me well and except for moving shots close up in brush they work very well.

The Burris is about the best of it all except for their spotty quality record. In my experience way to high a percentage of their scopes have all sorts of trash and floaters that gets on the lens and are a nuisance to use of the scope. I like the wide FOV at lower power (same as the Leupold 2X) and the ability to crank it up for more magnification on the range and for long range use.

I guess if I were asked to recommend one of them I'd say chose either of the Bushnell scopes really unless real close moving game is expected to be the main target and if so then I'd have to question why you don't have an iron sighted revolver on hand to deal with that and stick to the 7-30 for longer range game. That's the path I ended up taking for mine.

Thanks GB my handgunning setup is a 8 1/2" contender barrel in 44 mag with a 2x leupold on top i will be using this one for my "woods" gun with heavy loads. The waters is going to be my field edge open area gun most likely with 140gr accubonds, i will always have my 4" taurus 357 on my hip for those quick shots or 2nd if needed.

In that case I'd recommend the Bushnell scope. I honestly don't see much difference between the trophy and Elite other than price. Both are much brighter and clearer than the Burris.

I'm really sold on the Burris Signature rings.  They have plastic inserts that are self-aligning so lapping in is not necessary for proper alignment.  Also, they won't leave any marks on your scope and I have yet to have them slip.  I like the double dovetail base (mine is a Leupold) but I also have weaver bases.  Burris also makes Signature Zee Rings (same features as above) that fit the weaver base.

Best read the spec's on the firefly reticle. I understand that it is quite THICK for a hunting scope.

Without doing an accurate count, I probably have a dozen Burris 'scopes on rifles and handguns and I have not had a bit of trouble with the flakes or whatever.  I did drop a SRH one time on a Burris 2x-7x nickel that was mounted on it and bent it all to get out.  I sent it back for an estimate on getting it fixed.  It was returned fixed--no charge.
I have two of the 4x-12x handgun 'scopes on Contenders.  One is a super 16" .223 Remington barrel and the other is a Super 14" 7-30 Waters barrel.  I shoot only cast in the Waters now and it is effective to 300+ yards with the 12x power.  I shoot at groundhog size steel targets.  My opinion is you can't have too much magnification as long as you can turn it down--thus the variables.  Good-luck with the Waters...BCB

This is a trophy model so i don't think i'll have the thick cross hair problem most likely my shots will be inside 200 yards so i think the 6x will be enough thanks

I bought a 7-30 as my first Contender and liked it so well, I bought another for my son.  My first is on is a 14" SS and has a 2.5X8 Leupold.  I took five deer the first two years I owned it.  The other is a 15" Fox Ridge and wears a 3X9 Burris.  My longest shot has been 156 yds.  Both are old type frames.  I like 130 gr Sierra bullets best.  I've also tried 120 BT.

I bought my Contender after shoulder surgery.  Was told not to shoot a rifle.  Learned to shoot the Contender left handed.  Still shoot left handed from a rest, but right handed if in a hurry.

I know that everybody has his preferences.  The bushnell is a best buy, particularly the trophy.  But, I really like my burris optics (2 rifle and 3 pistol barrels).  I have nowhere near the experience of Graybeard, and I greatly value his opinion on this stuff, but the few Burris scopes I have had have all been fabulous.

Well i may end up with more scopes than barrels i got a scope from Cowboyup a 2-6 trophy we have a store locally going out of bus. I stop by the other day and found 3 boxes of federal 7-30 ammo REAL cheap. Then yesterday something told me to go back to see what was left. I walked in and on the counter was a silver scope i picked it up and looked at it, it was a Burris 4x the outside looked kinda bad so i looked at the glass clean as a pin. I ask the young guy behind the counter about it he said it was his and he got it to go on a pistol but never used it it rolled around in the storage box behind the seat. I ask was the price right (25.00) he said yes well it went out the door with me. So i called Burris (really nice lady on the phone) i ask if i could send it back in to just have it checked she said no problem so i be sending it off to the when my other scope gets here right place right time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
