.308 Survivor range day (update)
« on: March 09, 2008, 04:40:13 PM »
Had a chance to get to the indoor range today with my new Survivor. After a few rounds to sight the scope I got some decent groups except for those darn fliers. The only problem was I had 4 rounds not fire this was factory Winchester the primers had what looked to be solid hits I will have to keep an eye on this to see what is going on.

The group on the left was 5 shots with one flier( 1.4") the one on the right was only four shots ran out of ammo( .95").

Fun gun to shoot but I will need to get a slip on recoil pad if I want to spend any decent time shooting from a bench.

Here is what my boys did with their new .22 my wife threw a couple .45s at him just to make sure.

Just curious. What range were you shooting at?

Only 25 yards. I know not the best groups. I am going to an outdoor range with a 600yard line and decent benches this weekend . I'll get it sighted in for 100 and try to get some decent groups. Need to pick up a couple more boxes of ammo maybe some Federal or Remington to see if I have the same fail to fire problem as I did with the Winchester Supreme.

I have shot about 5 boxes a piece of remington, federal, and winchester and have had 0 misfires. I would definitely look into what is causing that. Good luck at the 600yd range I wish I had one around here to take a shot at. I hadn't thought about throwing some lead at the old purple monster before, might have to do that this weekend.

years ago I was an electrician and was doing a remodel. I was there for 3 days about 6 hours each. The whole time I was there all mom did was play Barney tapes over and over for their daughter. I 'm glad someone found a use for him.  Looks like the little one are going to be marksmen.

SS,

I'd read #1 of the Handi Basics 101 before I got too worried about it, if that doesn't help, H&R may have to take a look at it, could be a defective transfer bar, weak hammer spring or bad firing pin.

I thought about that but they still didn't fire after trying them again. I will pay more attention to the trigger pull this weekend. I dont think it is the transfer bar being bad and the hammer and the firring pin springs seem solid. As you suggested it is more then likely the nut behind the but.

If the primers had nice deep pin strikes as you said, then it's likely just defective ammo.  ;)

They had nice dents in the primer. The odd thing is it was one box of ammo four of them wouldn't fire and I had 2 more that fired on the second attempt. I think on the 2 that fired on the retry was me getting off the trigger to soon those 2 had light strikes the first time.
Just odd to have that many rounds out of a box come up bad. But I will shoot it again this weekend and pay more attentionn to the trigger.

I will let you all know how it goes.

I got back out to the range this weekend and did some long range shooting. To address the problem with misfires I picked up some 150grn Remington Cor-Loc's every one fired with no problem. The closest I was shooting was a 8X8" metal swinger @ 200 yards. I found out that with my 25 yard setting I didnt have to make any adjustments to ring the plate and I only had to aim at the top of the plate to hit center at 300 yards. I tried a couple of shots at the 600 yard plates but it was pretty windy and I didnt have a spotter so not sure If I had any hits.

Tim you were right guess I had gotten a bad box of ammo. Glad that was an easy fix.

Oh to help with the punch I picked up one of those shoulder pads that you wear. It made this gun (6 1/2" with out scope) a pleasure to shoot and I still have easy access to the storage in the but stock.

The one thing I had to do to get correct alignment with the scope was build up a cheek pad using some thin foam I had around the garrage. For now I just used electrical tape until I can get a pad of the right height that looks better.

I must say I am really happy with this rifle. Now I cant wait for next deer season to give it a chance to put meat in the freezer.

P.S. I got to spend some time Saturday evening with Handi Rifle talk about a great guy to spend some time with. He brought along his 38-55 target that he is making the scope mounts for talk about a cool looking set up.

That's great news!! You might try one of the stretchy neoprene ammo carriers slipped over the stock, put a little foam under it on the comb to help with the cheek weld and eye alignment.

Thanks for the update, glad you and Handi got together, those kind of meetings are special!! ;)

Thanks for the tip Tim I will have to pick up one and give it a go.

Hopefully Handi posts a range report with his 38-55 set up. I didnt get to see him shoot it but he said he has some more ideas to work on for it.

There's not much to post, yet anyway.  I started off at 25yds this time (old dog new trick) and took three shots and was makin nice groups dead on the bull.

Made some elevation adjustments and after two guesses was hittin the 200yd ram every shot, was too easy.  I should have know something wasn't going to be right, and sure enough, the front mount wasn't holding the setup tightly enough and the whole scope slid forward.  I have the leather ring inside a steel ring that goes in the front mount, and the steel ring and the leather stayed together, but the whole ball of wax slid forward.

Well by this time I'd move the target to 100 to test for groups, and you guessed it, couldn't get it on paper.  Ahhh such is life.  By this time I had about 5 rounds left (out of 30 I started with) and the wind was picking up so much it blew my target stand over.  This stand has stood against 25-30mph winds at home with no problem, just to give an idea what the weather got to.

So, I spent the last few aiming at the ram again.

Gonna make a better mouse trap before the next range trip.  The good news is I think I have a good load.  I use 2.8cc of GOEX CTG, with a .030" fiber wad over powder, and a circle of wax paper over the wad, and the 245gr Chey-Cast .380 bullet seated to the crimp groove and crimped with the Lee FCD.

The wax paper is because I think it was grouping crappy last time out and thought it MIGHT be due to the wad sticking to the base of the bullet.  Seems I read that somewhere before.  I'll also try the crimp-no crimp route as well, once I get the bugs out of the mounts.

Boy this re-inventing the wheel is a steady job!

Well I had a great time seeing it and talking to you about it. For those who saw his pics on the other post the pics dont do it justice Handi has done a top shelf job on this project. I hope you get the front mount sorted out and find away to keep the front lens from sooting up.

Boy do I know what you mean.  I think what you are doing is very cool. Keep up the good work.

SS,

Sure wish I had a range like that.  Good job with the .308.  And best luck with the meat in the freezer part. ;)

This was the first time I have been to this range. Its a bit of a drive for me and was a special occasion. Usually I just set up some targets on some local BLM land and pace out my range lines with my GPS. I have some more work to do with it. I need to put together a stash of brass and bullets and start rolling my own and I need to put a variable scope on it. The fixed 4X it has on it now is a decent piece of glass but I need more power for longer shots.

Tim

I reget not reloading with my Father.  He passed at only 51 and I had not started in reloading until I was trying to figure out what to do with all the different colored reloading equipment setup on his bench.  I do it heavily now.  I've been self taught, and feel that little connection to a past time he lived for.

SS,

Good for you!  I also let my son help with case prep for now. 8)

My boys do case prep and bullets seating when I am loading cast. I handle all the jacketed bullets primers and powder charges. My 6 year old just likes to pull the handle he doesn't care what it is doing just as long as he is pulling.
