45-70 modified into a 460 s&w ??
« on: March 10, 2008, 06:53:40 AM »
can a 45-70 handi be rechambered into a 460 s&w  so that it can be used with 460 s&w ,454 and 45's ? i think this wold be an extreemly versitle gun if it can be done . i know TC makes a katmi version in 460 but thats the only factory made rifile in that caliber that i know of and it cost more than twice what a handi does . if it can be done any guesstimates as to what would be a fair price for having it done . H&R wont do it . thanks .

First of all, the 45-70 doesn't use the same size bullets, .452"-.454" bullets are too small, .452"s will drop thru the barrel, you need .458" bullets. If you want a 460S&W Handi, you can rechamber a 45Colt Carbine barrel if you can find a 460 reamer.

Since the 45-70 uses .457 to .460 bullets and the .460 cartridges use .454 diameter bullets I wouldn't think a rechamber would be worth while.
