Rear Sight position on Mossberg 500
« on: July 10, 2003, 03:46:12 PM »
I installed clamp-on fiber optic sights on my grandson's 20 ga. Mossberg 500 Youth with ribbed barrel.  I installed the rear sight back as far as possible at the receiver/barrel interface.  The front sight is just behind the existing front bead.
Question is.........Should the rear sight be moved forward a few inches or am I correct assuming the longer sight radius would be best?  With those two bright green dots glowing on the rear sight, I find even though I can't focus them, they still lay either side of the front red dot easily.  What is the correct placement for the rear sight?  Every open sighted rifle I've seen, the rear sight is usually placed about two inches ahead of the end of the barrel.  What's your opinion?

I would think that they should be moved forward. Seems to me that having the rear sight that close to the eye would fowl things up optically. Your eye would be trying to focuss on an extreemly close object and not be able to see the front bead. This is just my guess.  KN

I would bet the youngster in question would have no problem with the sights where they are..  I would say they are fine but to check view the sights as if firing the weapon and check the amount of daylight on each side of the front bead when it's situated in the notch correctly.  If there's enough to easily center the front bead in the notch, it's in the right place.  With the fiber optics and a shotguns range, it is not that important..  Good luck and we should all take a youngster to the woods this fall.  It's the best way to guarantee the sport we love continues..
