recommendations for first fllintlock
« on: March 11, 2008, 01:18:17 PM »
Folks,
I decided to get involved with flintlocking, and I have narrowed down my search to the Lyman Great Plains Rifle(.50) and the Deerstalker(.50) I plan to look at both, and of course, playing into my decision is which is most comfortable to me.  From what I have read, the GPR is recommended by several on this forum--I won't repeat the reasons here.  My brother shoots a Deerstalker and swears by it.

My question is this:  is the GPR worth the extra $100 or so to the first time buyer?  I will be using primarily during the extra deer season in Pa, with some practice-shooting during the summer and fall.

Thanks.

Well, let me say right out that I have a three month old Great Plains .54 caliber flintlock with the slow twist (ball) barrel, and I love it.

They're both Lyman guns with the same lock and same barrel quality.  So, it's pretty much a matter of what you want as far as style, barrel twist, length, and features.  The GP has double set triggers, which I like (some don't).  The GP barrel is 32", the Deerstalker is 24".  The GP can be had in 1 in 60" twist, or 1 in 32" twist.  The Deerstalker is 1 in 48".

I'm sure you have shouldered your brother's Deerstalker.  How did it feel to you?  Have you shouldered a GP?  One or the other might feel better to you.

For me, the GP was worth the price.

Yes

If you order it from Midsouth Shooter's Supply, you can get the best price.

playing into my decision is which is most comfortable to me

ONLY IF IT FIT'S!   The GPR GPH gun doesn't fit me for *%!t.  If it feel's better for you to shoulder the flat butt of the stalker go for it! trust me, I have seen more successfulll shooters with a gun they like than those that have a gun others "tell them" they should like!

Them freacking curvey butt plates don't fit everybody! Don't you fret nun about that 1-48 vrs, other twists,,they shoot just fine! and P.S. the GM IBS fit's the Stalker not the GPH/GPR!

The crescent butt plate was designed for off hand shooting, it goes on your bicep, not your shoulder...

In my last range session with the GP .54, I shot 35 rounds with a patched ball and 95 grains GOEX FFg.  I found it comfortable shooting with the crescent butt plate properly placed just above my bicep and my elbow out 90 degrees from my body.  Put it on your shoulder and you will feel it.

I cut the toe of the butt down on my GPR, straightened out the but plate to match, cut the toeplate down (had to drill a second screw hole in it, though) and ended up with a rifle which is way more comfortable for me to shoot.
