Stock question and bedding...
« on: March 12, 2008, 05:59:55 AM »
My friend bought a SPS Varmint in 243 and loves it, as do I ;D However not so much on how flimsy the stock is farther forward as it will flex bad with Bi-Pods mounted plus he wants it free floated.
Until he can get a better replacement stock, we were thinking of possible ways to stiffen this one up.

Has anyone tried using a compound like JB Weld inside the barrel channel as a bedding?
It's got to make it stronger and stiffer.

I thought about trying it on an old synthetic stock of mine to see if it would help any before he goes about it on the SPS stock.
Any thoughts?

There are many things that you can do too help, but none are going to be a permanent solution. Any 2-part Epoxy will help stiffen it up, I have used Carbon Arrow shafts that I cut down to put inside the tracks and epoxied in and it worked OK.I have heard of people putting steel & aluminum rods, old fishing poles.etc anything that you can cut down and use as the base for the epoxy to set too.

As far as floating out the barrel, take your time and go a little bit at a time with a Dremel. If you take too much off, it will actually hurt it if you do.

Hope this helps-Tim

We thought about that as well, using a piece of steel or aluminum bar and epoxy around that.
Wonder how many packs of JB it will take? ;D

Quite a few.

I suggest Devcon or Marine Tex to do your bedding. Both work great and are easily applied.

+1 on the Marine Tex.  That's all I use anymore.
