Ok,  I have always know I was slow, so help me out here.  About 2 or 3 years ago my brother-in-law won a nice Rem BDL 270, scroll work  on the hindge plate, top of the receiver, very nice.  Last year I bought it from him and I was interested to find out when it was made.  Looked at the sticky and then on the left side of the barrel.  Now I am confused.  Can some one help me.

Reading from left to right (muzzle to receiver) there is what appears to be a tool mark (sort of a V shape),  then in small letters   xs  , all of these are in line but are slightly angled toward the top of the barrel.  Then in larger letters is stamped   DE  parallel to the bore.  I read this as the rifle was made in   Sept of  1984.  Is that right?  The serial number is E65xxxxx.

If I am correct then I wonder where this thing was for all those years?

Went to the Remington site and gave them my serial number.   They came back and said the gun was made in 1999.  Go figure.
