sling options for 7600 carbine
« on: March 13, 2008, 08:40:08 AM »
Just received a special run 7600 .308 QWAC. It's a nice rifle but did not come exactly as pictured on the stores website. The stock is actually the standard synthetic Monte Carlo design (except in camo) with no rear sling swivel. So based on posts from this site and others, I ordered an Uncle Mikes barrel band and a shotgun sling made by Outdoor Connections.

Unfortunately the barrel is too thick for the barrel band. I can barely get the screw to reach (let alone completely close the band) if I mount the band in front of the sight. Apparently the 7600 carbine barrels are at least a little thicker than the standard length barrels, unless you all are mounting your barrel bands more than a foot above the slide.

Uncle Mikes also offers a swivel attachment that screws into the fore end. I have read several posts recommending against this because it may loosen the fore end but Remington sells the 7600P with this kind of swivel attachment. Does the 7600P have a more sturdily designed fore end? Has anyone used the fore end swivel on a standard 7600 without any problems? If not, where would I find a barrel band that fits?

Thanks,
Tj

I just bought the exact same qwac. I put the forearm type sling attachment on mine. I can't see where it will cause any grief.

My current 7615P uses the forearm attachment, insofar I cannot imagine how this would cause problems.

May want to look at the Uncle Mikes 'Split' Barrel Band. It's not a full barrel band, it only grabs the lower half of the barrel. Works great on many of my rifles including a 760. I have a forend adapter on my 760 carbine. Works fine, shoots great. Not sure if it will fit the 7600, but it's worth a try. The only difference I see is that my sling moves with the slide on the carbine. They used to say, back in the 60's & 70s', the forend adapter would cause the slide to rattle more, but I didn't see it with mine. To me they are equally good, its a matter of preference and what you can find.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will give the forearm swivel attachment a try.

thumbcocker - Unfortunately I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. It just keeps on snowing here and I have to take advantage of every non-snowy day I get in order to conduct tracking surveys for a wildlife study I am working on.

KROCHUS:  You really want to change to the barrel band.  The one that attaches to the end of the forearm is for the 7400, Automatic.  If you continue to use that one, eventually you will have the problem I did.  I bent the tube that the slide works on, it is not designed to take the stress of a sling.  Had to send it back to Remington to get the tube replaced.

They make all sizes of barrel bands, just have to measure yours and get the right one.  Uncle Mikes makes them in sizes to fit .22RFs all the way up to 12GA.  I just had to go to Midway to find the right one for my TCR, none of the local shops had the one I needed.  Measure your barrel diameter, then go on line to Midway's site and you can find the one you need and get the part number.  Then you can order it through Midway or take the number and size to your local distributor and order it.  I put the split band on my 760, after going through the hassle of getting the gun fixed, just one day it got real hard to pump, never knew when I damaged it.  But Remington sent me a scathing letter to tell me I was using the wrong sling swivel.  At the time they sent me the part number so I could order it from my local vendor.  Just happened the gunsmith in town had the right barrel band in stock.  He said he had seen several Remington pumps damaged like that.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I'm not too worried my rifle came that way, Remington is who installed the sling swivel on my rifle. I see no reason to change it. I've had the forearm off my rifle and the hangar appears to be very robust short of running over the rifle with a track loader I don't see it getting bent

Well, this brings me back to my original question. Since Remington puts a forearm sling swivel on their police models but recommends that you not use one on their standard models, does this mean that the forearm tubes on the police models are stronger than the standard??? If so can you purchase one of these tubes to place on a standard model?

Now that I have the sling attached to the forearm I find that I really like this configuration. I can use the sling as a shooting sling and still work the action without unwrapping the sling from my arm. I don't think I could do this nearly as easily with a barrel band. There does not seem to be any undue stress on the forearm from shooting or carrying. I guess I could imagine bad things happening if the sling caught on a branch if you fell while holding the rifle firmly in your hand. My bigger concern is that over time the forearm connecting rod might loosen and then be more susceptible to damage.

I just found this site.  I hope someone can help.  I have a 7600, bought new in 1985.  Where can I find the swivel mounting hardware that screws in to the forend cap?
thanks
