Rabbit urine
« on: July 11, 2003, 03:57:33 AM »
I started raising rabbits this spring, and as I was dumping the waste bucket the other day I noticed how strong it smelled after setting for a couple days. Seems like it would be a good canine lure, and I wondered if anyone uses rabbit urine. Any ideas? JUD

My shooting buddy and i use kind of the same method while shooting Foxes. We start the night shooting Rabbits for the table and when it comes time to clean them we use the waste to line the fences, just high enough that the foxes take a while to retrieve it. We then head back to the Shearing Quarters to put the Rabbits on ice leaving enough time for the Foxes to get the scent. Then its out with the 223! We bag a hell of alot of foxes this way.

:D Thanks for the reply Mick. I've heard you have a bit of a rabbit population problem. I'm glad you put them to good use. JUD

Thanks Tom, I guess if nobody has had any negative experiences with it I will give it a try. I would think that waste along with some fur in a dirt hole would get some attention.

We have raised rabbits also and I have used droppings but never urine.  I do not believe the droppings had any effect on any of the sets.  Last year there was some disscussion on using house cat urine and droppings which could be done with the "clumping" cat litter available.  I got real excited about that knowing how coyotes love house cats.  I used it in the UP and in Central Michigan.  I got denials in both areas.  I saw where they walked around the set but would not come in.  Wether it was too strong or the litter itself gave off some type of offensive odor I don't know.  Will not be using again.  If you try rabbit urine only put it at 1 or 2 sets where the dirt is light enough that you will be able to read the tracks to see what is really happening.
