.308 Winchester Powder choice?
« on: March 13, 2008, 03:48:32 PM »
Hey Guys,
You have probably had this question a hundred times, but I have not been able to locate the answer.  I recently inherited a model 70 Winchester Featherweight in .308.  I loaded up about 20 rounds with some IMR 4350 (46.4 gr. as per Sierra Book) with some Sierra 165 SBT.  I used these because I happened to have both the bullets and the powder.  I took the rifle to the range and it sprayed bullets all over a 5" circle at 100 yds.  I was told by my father-in-law that the gun was very accurate, but apparently it really did not like my first choice of load.  From what I have read, the .308 generally performs well with bullets in the 150 to 168 gr. weight.  What suggestions do you have for powder.  I have  a box of Sierra BTHP in 165 gr. and would like to be able to use them .                                                                                                                                                                                                             Moosie

 Varget Varget and Varget

Trying any other powder for 308 is simply a waste of bullets :o

I have had great accuracy results with RL-15 and a variety of 150 grain bullets in 2 different rifles.

Varget is a great rifle powder.  It is pretty tough to beat in the .308 Winchester.

With 150 grain bullets I've used Varget, RL-15 and IMR-4895. All of these powders perform great in my 308's but I have alot more IMR-4895 so this is what I use the most.
I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any of these three powders.

W748 and Ball C2 were both developed for the 308W. 50 years ago we burned a lot of IMR4320 with Hornady and Nolser 150's in the 308W. We didn't know it wasn't "the" powder to use. Many more choices today, and a lot of them really do work.

Just a thought -
I have a 257Roberts that is a tackdriver with IMR4350 (which we were told back then was way too slow burning rate) - one particular season I took it out of mothballs and off to the mountains for mulies in Wyoming. I was elk hunting with a different rifle and the mulies were sort of an add-on for this trip. The first mulie I shot with the 257 was struck nearly a foot from where I was aiming. HUH? It was late and I passed it off. The next day, I couldn't buy a hit. I finally gave up in desperation and took out the other rifle to 'begin' elk hunting. As an afterthought, I took out a big screwdriver (cring!) and took up a 'lot' of slack on the guard screws on that 257! Never had them loosen before, and never take it out without checking them since. Could be........

I was a die hard Varget user for a few years with 168gr Ballistic SiverTips. I bought a can of BL-C(2) not too long ago, just because that's all the store had in stock. It was the first time I've used ball powder and I loved it, I run it through my Hornady powder measure at 44gr with Berger 168gr VLD. No more weighing each load, saves a ton of time and monotony!

This was shot by my girlfriend at 200 yards, I still have yet to shoot them...

Thanks for the input fellows.  Sounds like Varget is the powder most recommend; I'll try it first.

Sweetwater, I have a .25-06 that loves 4350 and 7828 equally.  It is, like your .257, a real tack driver.

Thanks, Moosie

We use Varget and like it a lot. Highly recommended. Easy to work with too. Grains are pretty short and meter well. It's one of the Extreme powders from Hodgdon and I like the stability.

This thread brings back a ton of great memories!  In 1970, I turned 12, and dad bought me a Remington model 760 .308 rifle.  He had bought one of the first 760s years before, also in .308.  I have been deer hunting with it ever since.  A few years ago I also purchased a Remington model 700 in .308 and have been using that while my son borrowed my 760.  I love both rifles in this caliber.  My son recently decided he wanted a bolt action .308, so I bought him a model 700 he picked out.
I wanted to shoot my .308 all year round, so I started reloading at 15 under my uncle's guidance.  I used 150 gr. (this matched the weight dad had me using for deer) Sierras (the only brand the local gunshop carried).  This shop only carried DuPont (IMR) powder.  My uncle had me buy 4350 for my first go-around.  I suspect he thought this would be a "safe" powder for a new reloader to use.  As I remember, this ammo shot well enough.  However, 4350 had long grains that did not measure real well, and most of the loads were compressed which I never did come to like much.  My second pound of power was DuPont 4320.  This stuff was Great - accurate, with shorter grains that did not require compressed loads to achieve good velocities. I used this powder and 150 gr. Sierras for years and the biggest buck on my wall was harvested with this combination.  Sometime in my early 30s, I bought a pound of W748 "ball" powder that my friend had been praising so highly.  I never bought IMR 4320 powder again.  W748 powder, along with Speer 165 gr. boattail bullets (another item my friend praised) became my "go to" load and I have shot a pile of deer with them.  W748 also worked great with Speer 125 gr. TNT bullets for varmints and plinking.   Along the way, I bought a pound of IMR 4895 to try out.  It worked fine, kind of reminded me of my 4320 days, but one pound was enough.  I also tried a pound of Varget.  It also worked fine.  It seemed cleaner - perhaps because it does not have the graphite coating.  However, many of the most accurate (in my rifle) loads, were compressed, and this probably led me to never buy a second pound of Varget.  A couple years ago, I started using Benchmark powder in my .223 rifles.  A kernel of Benchmark looks just like a Varget kernel cut in half.  Benchmark is clean, temperature stable (I had to be careful about not leaving my W748 loads in the summer sun), and is faster burning so I can totally avoid compressed loads, and it is amazingly accurate.  Again, I first bought Benchmark for my .223, but Hodgdon, advertises this powder to work "extremely well in .308 Win".  So I tried it my .308 and I agreed so much that now all I use in all my .223 and .308 loads is Benchmark.  I'm going to be 50 this year, and it's been quite a journey with my trusty .308.  I know that you don't hear much about it, but Benchmark is where I'm at now.  I highly recommend that you buy a pound and see what you think.  If you also have a .223, you have even more reason to buy a pound.  Thanks for letting me reminisce and share what has worked for me over the years.

my rem 660 sure does like 748 and a 180 gr bullet, however most of the aforementioned powders should do well in your 308. good luck, dan

Thanks Chappy, I've been shooting the 308 since 71, a little Remington 600 that was my first "big bore" well it was to me then! Been trying to decide between trying varget or benchmark, and since I have a couple 223 too you helped me decide on a pound of benchmark to try in both.

Your Welcome!  It was fun to remember and share.  There are many good powders out there.  It's fun experimenting a little to see what works in a particular rifle and load combination, and whether or not a certain powder will have the characteristic's you like in order to make it a keeper on your reloading bench.
dwob: Let us know what you think about Benchmark in your .223 and .308.  I read a lot of feedback about Varget, but little on Benchmark.
When I was using W748, I used CCI mag primers because that is what the Speer manual recommended.  Now I use Winchester standard primers in all my .223 and .308 Benchmark loads, and get outstanding results.  I still shoot a lot of Speer 165 gr. boat tails.  My son has been on a "premium bullet" kick for a while (and that's fine - it's his money), but it's interesting to note that his 165 gr. Nosler Accubonds are no more accurate (in our rifles and hands) than the Speers.  I also doubt a whitetail can tell the difference - dead is dead.  But that is a whole 'nother topic.

It helps to match bullet weights to rifling twist-rates........12" barrels like 150-165s; heavier bullets like faster twists; & lighter ones like slower rates of twist, so I'm told. I've been able to to put 150s-165s into 1" with minimum charges of Varget in my 1 in 12 Rem, at 200yds. jd45

I've only used IMR 4895.  Get outstanding groups, so never tried another powder.  Lots of good advice on this forum.  good luck and have fun!
