lets vist the forager gun.
« on: March 14, 2008, 07:02:22 PM »
I watched the movie into the wild this week, although I thought the main character was a arrogant idiot , the movie got me thinking ,what would I bring for firearm(s) if I went into the wild and had to live off of what I could shoot, maybe throw in a few snares and some basic fishing equipment, but mostly depend on hunting without regard to bag limits, open seasons etc.since I live in Maine I was thinking maybe a savage 24 20ga./30-30 ,with a 22lr revolver this should cover everything from moose to squirrel although something like a m6 survival gun in 410/22 hornet with a 22lr shell adapter would probably be a lot easier to carry remember we would be carrying everthing on foot, any idea's.-tt

Hello TIMBERTRAMP.  At first glance, I tended to agree with either of your two choices. A shotgun would certainly be efficient on running small game and flushing fowl. However, after thinking about it, it occurred to me, the size and weight of shot shells and center fire rifle cartridges would limit the number of shots you would be willing to carry.
I got a glass, put some ice in it, and covered it with about three fingers of Irish whiskey, then proceeded to sip and think about what I would carry for the situation you describe.
The chosen weapons should be able to remain functional with limited maintenance, and of the lightest weight and smallest caliber that could be depended on to ensure your survival. Tall order, indeed !!!
After about an hour of reflecting on choices, (and, while I might regret it once I was out there) here is what I decided I would want along for weapons.
I believe a 5 pound, stainless, Savage 93, with light weight barrel, synthetic stock, chambered in 22 WMR, with all the ammo i could carry for it, would provide sustanance, up to and including venison, for an extended period.
Simpley for protection from the larger critters, I would settle on the lightest magnum single action revolver I could find. At about 40 ounces, I think that would be a nickle plated, 4 5/8ths barreled E.A.A. Bounty Hunter, in 44 Rem. Magnum. As it would be seldom, if ever needed, I would carry no more than 12 - 18 rounds.
Just my thoughts. Now let's see what the other guys come up with ?
