And I don't like it.The stock is nice but,the recoil with that damm thing on  is NASTY.I think I'll stick with the pistol grip and just get me a 20" or 26" 6mmBR or some lite kicker.

I put one on an 18" 450 marlin full bull barrel and I didn't like it either. Set it back up as a pistol and I can shoot it much more accurately.  KN

45/70 Encore

PJ:  Is your stock wood or composite? Does it have a recoil pad ?  What load are you shooting in the Encore ?  I have a Super 16  45/70 Contender with a Choat folding stock.  Shooting 300 gr jhp with 42.9 gr of IMR 4198 recoil isn't bad.  Been thinking of trading my Savage 110 in 300 Win Mag for a Encore rifle in 300 Win Mag because it would be lighter & thinner. Wondering now is it going to kick like a mule ? Has anyone done this same thing & been happy with the results?  Thanks Ken  8)

I have the composite stock with the factory recoil pad.The loads were 53grs H-4198 and a 300gr HP.No muzzle brake on it I don't like them.

I bought my 375JDJ it was set up as a Carbine rifle. 16 1/4 inch barrel. It sure would thump you off the sand bags. I hunted with it that way and took two deer with it. Now it wears a pistol grip.

PJ:  I can understand your recoil problem with that load.  I have a 1895 Marlin 45/70 that I load 49.2gr IMR 4198 W/300 gr JHP (kicks pretty good-no recoil pad).  Your Encore is probably fairly light with the composite stock. Thanks for the pic.  Did you shoot your 300 Win Mag as a rifle before you cut it down? Thanks Ken.

HEY, what happened to ole woodpecker lips. Seriously man, my first encounter w/ 45-70 was many years ago with 16 1/4" barrel(no brake) on a Contender carbine with rynite stock.  Even in my younger(read tougher) days, I freely admit I couldn't handle it.  OOOOUUCH!!!!!!  This barrel is FOR SALE!!  Fortunately, I made myself try it just once with pistol grips and the "for sale" sign was put away immediately.   Walt

I guess I'm just used to handguns. The 45-70 does not seem so bad as a pistol but,man as a carbine it's down right Nasty.I'm not going to sale it or anything like that. I had a Super-16 in the Contender and miss it dearly should have never sold it.I like it as a pistol and I think it's going to stay that way.
