Meet Rusty

 Rusty is a Howitzer cross that was located in our local classifieds. He is now looking to be brought back to life. He suffers from Rickety Wheels, Missing Cap Squares, Elevating Screw and Implements. Not to mention a need for color.

 Since, Rusty seems to have a bit of "Southern Expression" in his design (I think that's what Lance calls it)  .  We have decided to add a touch of gray to him. So, the big questions is.... Is there a "Confederate Gray" paint mix that is used? I know that the OD color has been discussed and posted but, I do not recall the Gray. So, if someone has this please let me know.

What are those grooves in the bore for?  It doesn't look like they twist at all.

Nice little project, I'm sure you'll have Rusty fixed up and belching smoke and fire in no time!
Now for a question..... straight rifling? no twist?  is this a piece of surplus barrel made into a muzzle
loader or is it a cast barrel? (o.k. I lied... 3 questions )

 I've asked myself the same question. I'm not sure. It may have been part of the material they machined it from. The grooves only go half way down the bore.

My guess would be that the grooves are vents to allow the charge to be seated firmly against the powder without encountering a compressed air situation.  I have to cut vents in my wads when I'm seating my smoothbore shotgun loads.  As that's a smoothbore as well, it's my guess those are simply vent slots.

Intoodeep, what's the dog's names  The only guys i ever talked with that used gray paint was the 18th South Carolina that lives in your neighborhood, i think they are in New Mexico. Anyway, they told me they had documents that their original unit used gray paint for artillery pieces. I don't know, but here's one of their pics:

 That is Cody who is posed. Thanks for the info on the 18th. I'll shoot them an email and see if they can give me a color mix.
