twist rate of a NEF 22-250??
« on: March 15, 2008, 03:44:23 PM »
Can anyone tell me the barrel twist rate of the 22-250?  Also, the heaviest bullet you have been able to successfully shoot.  Thanks
Doug

Check in the FAQ's, there is a section that gives the twist rates for nearly every caliber. ;)

Thanks for the reply.  Unfortunately, I'm new to the forum and can't seem to figure out how to do that.  I've tried the search, but am doing something wrong.  Can't seem to find the FAQ section, probably looking right at it.  Anyway, thanks again, I'll keep trying.

The FAQs and Help sticky is the second topic down from the top of this forum, kinda hard to miss, it's the one that says "PLEASE READ ME!!!".  ;D

Thanks Tim.  Sorry I didn't think to look there.  So, the heaviest one could probably shoot are 50grainers.  Guess I'll be looking for a new 223 with the 1:9 twist, so I can shoot the heavies.

Here's the reply I posted at Shooter's Forum:

All H&R 22-250 barrels have 1:14" twist and it is the standard for the industry, Shilen recommends 55gr as the heaviest .224" bullet for a 1:14" twist, but not all bullets are equal in that respect, some bullets like the 64gr Win PP and 63gr Sierra Varminter #1370 may work in them since they're short for their weight, they work fine in 1:12" .223 barrels, dunno if they'd work at 22-250 velocities in the 1:14" barrel tho, but if I wanted a heavier bullet, I'd sure try them first, a flat base bullet would be more likely to work than a boattail too. The Lyman 48th shows data for the 60gr Hornady HP #2275 and the 63gr Sierra SMP #1360 in their 1:14" 22-250 test gun.

Just looked at your comments on 1:9 barrels may not be the "hottest" ticket.  Well, my original intent was to get alittle more fps with the 22-250 than say a 223, and I just ran across a 22-250 new in box for around $150.  But I had the idea that I wanted to shoot 70"s, maybe bad idea.  Just go with what they got and leave well enough alone.  When you're ignorant, as I, just follow and be happy ;D. ;D ;D ;D

Yes, the 1:9" barrels can be frustrating, but those made since Marlin started making barrels early last year seem to be better, dunno if it's tighter bores, but there have been some great accuracy reports in the last several months for bullet weights up to 75gr in the 1:9" .223.

The 22-250 @ 1:14" will shoot longer/heavier bullets.    Velocity plays a big part in required twist rate.  A .223rem shooting heavy(longer) bullets needs a fast twist rate, a hype-velocity 22 centerfire doesn't.

Since the 22-250 can push vitamin Pb pills much faster than a .223, it will be able to shoot heavier(longer) bullets with the 1:12" and 1:14" standard rates that the 22-250, 220swift and 225win use.

Ok, thanks, I never thought of it that way.  Not that I understand exactly, but it gives serious pause and more fun thoughts to contemplate.
