newbe Shotgun barrel length

Ok, I am a newbe to the cowboy scene.  I have just picked up an old Springfield SxS 12 guage shotgun.  The finish is brown patina and the case colors are less than 20% but the bore is perfect and shinny.  It has 30" barrels with F and M chokes.  Should I cut this gun down to 20" or 24", if I cut it should I choke tube it or leave it cylinder bore?  I only have $200.00 in the gun so I could have some work done to it.

You know pard, I would probably leace the length alone for a while. I have a backup I use with 32" barrels and it isn't all that more bother than my 20" barreled Bounty Hunter. I like the way it aims better with the long barrels too. Try some Winchester AA Featherlites or lites in it and give it a whirl. You may be pleasantly surprised. You can get by with just cylinder bore if you cut the barrels, but you may have to experiment some with different wads to get enough close pattern for heavy knockdowns.

I'd take Howdy Doody's advise 'n leave it be at first. I shoot a full length barreled Crescent SxS, choked full and modified like yours, and love it! The longer barrels don't seem to slow me done any, and are actually handier to deal with when picking  up/putting down the staged gun. And it absolutely HAMMERS those scattergun targets! When I get a popper that tosses a bird, I dump the modifed barrel on the popper and then have all the time in the world to get on the bird and vaporize it! 8)

I'll jump in and and agree with my esteemed colleges for another reason. I like seeing the old guns in their origional form. If ya need a shorter barrel, ya might look for an extra barrel set and have them cut down. Also, I think the Springfield is the same gun as the Stevens and if it is, you may find the weight of the longer barrels help keep the action open during reloads.
