M1 Garand, loading the clip>>>
« on: March 16, 2008, 11:40:05 AM »
I recently purchased a Garand and now having received my ammo from CMP I seem to have a problem upon loading the clip.
When I shove the loaded clip into the well the instant it locks in the bolt releases and slams forward. Needless to say, this is unsettling. Is there a fix to this problem?  The rifle appears to be in very good shape and I wouldn't think something would be worn that's causing this....Thanks, Roy

That's the way it's supposed to be.  Just remember to hold the bolt to the rear until the clip clicks in, then release it to slam home.  If you forget once, don't worry about forgetting the second time.

AtlLaw:  Please let me add to Castaway's comment by advising you to keep your thumb out of the way when setting the clip all the way in.  One technique those of us who have not enjoyed the 'awareness' of 'the M1 Thumb', which is a badly bruised, bloodied or broken thumb, is to keep the heel of your right hand (if you load right handed) against the bolt while pushing down with your thumb.  If you load left handed you can set the clip while holding the bolt open with the heel of your right hand.  This allows you to set the clip and to then release the bolt/operating rod without gettin' your thumb in the way of the bolt as it closes.  Hope this really helps.  Mikey.

<snip> keep the heel of your right hand (if you load right handed) against the bolt while pushing down with your thumb.

True dat!  That's part of the way I was taught to do "Inspection Arms" many long years ago... many, many long years ago...  :'(

Using the heel of your right hand to hold the bolt open when inserting the clip is a long standing technique for loading a Garand and not smashing your thumb,  However,  the army taught its troops to shove the clip in with one fast motion and then jerk their hand out of the way.  With a little practice you can do this very fast and easily.  I have loaded and fired four to five clips in one minute on occasion using this method

The main thing is that you have a Garand, and remember to save your brass that you shoot, its reloadable.

Practice dropping an empty clip in the rifle, and slipping 2 rounds under its lips and loading them.  This is something that you will have to do if you shoot in a CMP garand match.  You will be required to fire 10 rounds, so everyone loads 2 first and then a full 8 round clip later.  And its good practice for learning to load your M1.

Good luck with a GREAT rifle.

There's another quirk of the M1 that you may be experiencing.  I use the process outlined by Mikey, and I've noticed that there are typically two distinct points in loading the M1 that result in an audible click.  As you are pushing the loaded en-bloc down into the receiver (using your thumb, with the blade of your hand in front of the op-rod handle as a precaution), it will get real tight and you experience the first 'click'.  At this  point, my SA's bolt will travel forward a very slight amount, perhaps 1/8" or so.  Your first instinct of preservation of course is to remove your hand as fast as possible, but at this point, *keep the pressure on the en-bloc*.  Only if you ease up will the bolt continue to slam forward.  Otherwise it will only jump forward a slight amount.  As you continue to push down on the en-bloc it will eventually lock in (the second point I referred to).  At this point, as soon as you let up pressure on the en-bloc the bolt will most likely slam forward and load the top round.  This is the moment you wish to jerk your thumb out of the hole.  Occasionally my bolt will remain where it was, and I have to give the op-rod handle a tap with heel of my hand.  Typically the bolt just slams shut.  I'm sure others  have experienced this phenomenon.  It's detailed as well in the Loading section of the CMP M1 Garand Owners manual, pretty much exactly as I've described it.  I just elaborated a bit.  The manual actually says to merely use your thumb without referring to using the blade of your hand as a precautionary measure.  I prefer to err on the side of caution.  Never hurts.  Good luck!
