Here's a little more on them, this one is a .22, first one I've seen that wasn't a shotgun, I think.

I wonder how hard or what the cost is to get one registered if I ever came across one that was never registered or the papers have been lost? I know the one author says he don't want to here or know about it and says see a lawyer. Sure would be cool to stumble onto a 28ga. Kurt

From what I understand, it's a bit more complicated.  A hand-gun that has been factory registered as an AOW is a $5 transfer.  If it is registered as a SBS, it's a $200 transfer.   Now's the hard part.  If there is a handi-gun that was never registered, it is illegal, and technically can never be registered.  Now, if you find one, theroitically, "someone" could disassemble it, register the frame as an AOW or an SBS, fill out the form 1, pay the $5 or $200, and re-assemble once approved, and own it legally.

IIRC:   AOW = any other weapon
          SBS  = short barrelled shotgun

Handi Guns were made from around 1924-25 up to 1934 - H&R argued against the NFA ruling, but lost - so stopped making them for sale in the US - I've heard remaining stock was sent to their adjunct in Canada for sale there and from what I've heard, also, they are still legal in Canada - in shotgun form - 28 ga. and .410 - 14mm bore or .410.
The rifled barrel versions in .22 and .32 are legal to own in the US.

so.......the opinion is, if you see one......receiver, that is....register it, then find a .410 barrel???
