Anyone been to Ranger Camp Ranches?
« on: March 19, 2008, 07:13:56 AM »
found it on the back of Peterson's Hunting magazine

main page

hog hunting link
http://www.rangercamp.com/hogh.htm

Looks like a do-it-yourself ranch with lodging that is nothing too special.

But 3 days (2 full days and 2 half days it looks like) for 300 dollars each sounds like a pretty good price for those wanting to skin and quarter their own meat and split the hotel bill in town.

Anyone been there?

I have no first hand knowledge of the operation. A look at the site indicates it's a low fence free range hunt and that means no promises you'll even see much less kill a hog. It's not just a "do-it-yourself" ranch but they also have fully guided hunts. As such you can bet that if they have fully guided hunters at the same time as you they not you will have the choice locations on the place.

Free range means the hogs come and go as they please. Their description of the terrain does make it sound like good hog country but east Texas more so than Hill Country I believe is the primary hog area of Texas. The Hill Country can be some seriously dry country depending on just where you are in it. Even streams dry up and stop flowing often.

I agree the price is low but that likely indicates low chances of success also.

I live about 30 miles from the ranch, but have never heard of it...but that's not a big deal...every ranch around here is a game ranch for at least part of the year.  I do have a friend that has a place south of Mason and there are plenty of hogs around.  If it's summer, hunt the water.  If it's winter, hunt in the middle of the day.  We've been dry, for a while, but now that the sows have their first litter of the year on the ground they're moving around quite a bit.  I've killed 14 so far this year about 30 miles to the north of me.  If you're also looking for deer, some people say the free-range deer in the hill country are small...but that's not always the case.  It's just that we have a lot...I mean a lot of deer, so most of the ones seen are the smaller ones.  I shot an 8 point on a free-range ranch...not a trophy, but still he was 16inches.  A week or so later while culling does, we saw another 10 point that must have been pushing 20-22 inches.

But, graybeard's right.  You might not see a thing.  I've been to my friends place in Mason when we got 4 hogs in one night and I've been when we didn't see a thing.  It's just the way it is in the Hill Country...but it's still some of the best hunting around.
