35 whelen range report with my reloads
« on: March 19, 2008, 09:04:18 AM »
All right this is my first attempt at reloading for my whelen.  rem brass, cci large rifle primers. Lee collet die, two loads
 22 inch 35 whelen with camolam T-hole
 Hornady 180 gr SSP  57 grains IMR4064 After getting on paper at 100 yards  1 group at 1 1/4inch   1 group at 1 3/4

 200 grain Rem corloct round nose  57 grains IMR 4064  1  2 inch group  1 2 1/2 inch group

Gonna play with the 200 grain rem a little. Real happy with the 180 SSPs  Gonna work real good on these Michigan whitetail
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I'd reconsider using the 180gr SSP in the Whelen at that velocity, it's pretty much used up starting out at 2300fps in the 35 Rem, Hornady lists that load at 2600fps in a 22" barrel. There are posts in the TC forum complaining about poor terminal performace in 357Maxis at 1800fps on deer when bone is encounted, if you can limit shots to lungs only, you'd probably be ok, but close shots will likely destroy a lot of meat.

Good reading Tim. what bullet would you suggest for the whelen. Would the rem corloct 200 grain PSP hold up I cant afford the high dollar bullets right now

Well, since the 225gr TSX is eliminated by $$, I'd do a little reading at the link below, particularly Paco Kelly's favorite Whelen loads.  ;) For a 180gr bullet, I'd try the Speer FSP Hot-Cor, it has a BC of .245 compared to .248 for the SSP, Speer #13 shows IMR 4064 as 56gr start, 60gr compressed Max at 2731fps , COL 3.030", CCI 200, Rem brass, in a 22" barrel.  ;)

in my 22" pallet stocked whelen, I use 200 gr hornady sp's and bl-c(2).  started by seating bullet long, to where it was hard to close action.  then turned seater plug down 1 full turn.  powder development started with 60.0 grain and worked to 62.5, no pressure signs.  60.5 gr @ roughly 2700fps gives me a consistant 1" 5 shot group, if I do my part.  good luck with yours--jim

I took my elk this year with a 225 gr Nosler Partition over 56 gr of Reloader 15. This is a mild load that shot really well in my rifle. 3 shots 1" at 100 Yds. My friend Whelen Brown in Canada says you can approach 63 gr with caution. Remember Speed isn't everything. Accuracy and down range performance of the bullet are more important then bulk speed. Nosler now has an Acubond 225 gr also, I have some coming for my 350 Jacob. Good shootin - Gary ;)

The Accubonds look a little more affordable. I dont need speed. Id rather have accuracy. But a little of both would be good ;D
