.357 Mag cast loads?
« on: July 12, 2003, 03:00:48 AM »
I have a 10" bull .357mag barrel Contender, that I would like to shoot 168gr cast bullets in. The bullet is a Lee plain base. My first two tries with H 110 were disappointing, with a 4-6" pattern at 25yd. No leading, to speak of. I don't think it's the barrel, 'cause it will shoot PMC 160gr loads into an inch at 75yd. Just haven't hit on a good load yet, given minimal testing. Trying to save some time & trouble by asking those of you that have "been there, done that". What'cha got, I can try?>>>>>>Bug.

Bug,
I shoot Lyman 358429 over 15+ grains of H110.  Load is hot but bullets are waterdropped and hard, lubed with LBT blue.  they shoot ok for me out to 50 yards but aren't good 100 yard bullets.  Much more accurate with gas check bullets though!  LBT 180GC and Lyman 358156GC both shoot into nice groups out to 100 yards, also seated over 15.7 grains of H110.  Maybe you need a gascheck?  I got these loads from an old Hogdon manual somewhere.

Is this load for hunting or target?  I've used Unique with cast bullets in the 357 for mid power loads with good success.  For hunting power loads I've used 2400 and a CCI 550 primer.

Just to clarify:

Sorry, Greg, for not being more specific. I'm looking for a full-house hunting load for 165-173gr cast bullets. Plinking loads have been no problem with W/C bullets, & jacketed bullets present no problems. I want to find loads, with a couple different powders, suitable for smallish (100lbs or less) deer, and wild hogs. I'm just trying to work up cast loads for everything I have. And thanks, guys>>>>>>>>>Bug.
