Turkey Hunting
« on: March 19, 2008, 03:10:42 PM »
Hey everybody. Our juvenile turkey hunt is this weekend here in East Tennessee. I'm 14 and me and my dad are probably gonna go huntin. My question is: When do the gobblers start answerin calls in Tennessee? I've only killed 1 turkey and it wasnt really a turkey hunt. (they just come out in my field and i shot one) My dad aint really a turkey hunter, but he is gonna take me anyways. But my main question is when do the gobblers start answerin calls? Any answers is appreciated.  And any advice on hunting turkeys is welcome.
Some days you're the bug, some days you're the windshield.

Doug if you are in woods where turkeys are  this time of year, provided they don't have hens with them, they should answer or come in to your call.
If you find a Gobbler alone and he answers, don't call to much,if he answered,he knows where you are and sometimes will walk in to your setup without anymore gobble'n.
Set up to call with your back to a big tree faceing in the direction you think the turkey will come. Also try to set up,where the turkey is in range when you first see him.  (ie rolling land, curve in road, bench on mountain side) If he can see where you are calling from he is unlikely to come in (ie across an open field, open hard woods etc.)
If you really like Turkey Hunting get a subscription to Turkey and Turkey Hunting Magazine, lots of info in it. They are on the web,do a search ,there are a lot of back issure articles that have a lot if infomation.

  Hope this helps

Good Luck ,hope you get a big one.

Doug, Plinker pretty well answered your question.  Welcome to a GREAT pastime!  Over the years(many) I've tried most of what the great outdoors has to offer and I've found nothing more exciting and more fun than spring Gobbler hunting.  Success isn't always killing a bird.  There will be some dissapointments for sure but I remember and enjoyed days when ol' longbeard whipped ol' Walt's butt just as much, if not more than when I carried him home with me.  Indulge and Enjoy !!!   Walt   ;)
