How about a pic with that blanket gone! Looks like you're hiding some more cool projects under it.

Your shop makes me feel better. I have at least 2 more square feet of uncluttered space than you. Nice work! MIKE

I would like to take credit for the other projects in the picture and not take credit for the shop ! this is the last of four barrels made by another and i snatched it up(right place right time) , this is his shop , i try and keep the flammibles stored a little safer  but alas my orginsational skills match my friends other than that.

I bet with all those thousands of drawings lying around, Don could probably locate one for you featuring the 1.65" Hotchkiss Mountain Gun.  Top quality drawings such as he has are an excellent way to start a detailed project such as this.  Good luck to you!  You have taken excellent photos of them both.  We really appreciate your sharing them with us.

Aha! I thought I recognised some of that disorganisation in other pics from friends that have dealt with Don L now that guardsgunner brought it up. Guardsgunner shoots an Ellsworth breechloader at Grayling. He's from south east michigan. Im from northern Saginaw county. Drag them guns north to grayling the end of July

kymmwilson,
Have you rifled the Hotchkiss yet. if so # of grooves and rate of twist. Did you EDM or machine the Sq. for the breech block?
Thanks
Bob

I prefer to put my gun in a trailor. The wheels wont hold up dragging it behind the Dodge. :o
see you there.

The may 2008 issue of gunsmagazine has a article on the grayling 2007 event. Wow, so much for the speed of the print media. I have both pages scanned but when I attach them they come across as too big and wont post

thanks guys
yes  i have already gotten everything available from Don and no i have not rifled it yet? but its all set up to do. the square in the breech is another animal altogether ,i just last night read the article about Rob Hubbard trials and tribulayions building his ellsworth gun and and he went EDM (much cheaper)                "www.nwtskirmisher.com/useful-extra4.shtml"

the b block is being made up at present and i am nothing but so pleased to have people like Don Lutz and Matt Switlik to fall back on for info and parts . the scratch building of other guns i,ve done and had done have taken years and years this one seams to be coming together at light speed , which i like as im not getting younger and hauling the big ones can be daunting (not this one)

I think the EDM is the only way to go on these projects. (I priced edm on a hoskiss about a year ago) Came out perfect on center, no worries about tool fex ect.
After you stumble over the learning curve, the rifling was a neat project.

     kymmwilson,   You wrote:

We don't know if you have a machine yourself or have one lined up to cut the rifling so we really don't know if the following is going to benefit you or not, but we will pass on the information anyway, hoping that it may help you out in furthering this EXCELLENT project.

A photo of the rack and the pinion gear and the method of indexing the rifling head to the tube was posted a while back by  guardsgunner on the third page of the thread on this board called, "How to Make a Rifling Machine from.....A to Z".  It can be found in the last post by Double D in the "Sticky" above named "Safe Loads and Cannon Plans".  Apparently our machine and his are very similar and work well to rifle nicely reamed bores.  Hope this helps you.  FYI

Mike and Tracy
