Light Mag ammo in a Handi
« on: March 20, 2008, 05:25:44 AM »
I am waiting on a 280 barrel to arrive from H & R and have a question about ammo. The Hornady Light Mag ammo has caught my eye and was wondering if that would be "ok" in a Handi. From what I read it is jumping up there into magnum country but wasn't sure if the gun would be ok with the added pressures.Hornady's website say that a slower burning powder is used that reduces pressure but I wanted to hear from the experts. The ammo in question os the 280 Rem 139 gr SST.....Thanks in advance

The Light Mag ammo may or may not shoot good, it's just like any other ammo in that respect, in ejector barrels it will tend to stick the empties in the chamber, but that shouldn't be an issue in an extractor barrel, give it a try and be sure to post a range report.  ;)

The moly-coated 139gr 280 Light Mag (green labeled box) is the most accurate factory ammo I have ever shot.

I got my 280 handi back in December.  My area range doesn't open till April, so I won't have grouping pictures till then, but I have shot my gun out at the farm a few times.  It will break clay pigeons on a dirt pile EVERY SHOT at 325 yards with the light mags.
I have it set up to aim 6" high at that distance, so I figure its zeroed at approximately 50 and 200 yards.

The chrony showed 3130 to 3145 out of the 26" barrel, which like you suggested is definitely in the range of some 7mm mag ammo.

I can't wait to get this gun on a good bench rest and see if it can do 100yd cloverleaf groups.
