223 Handi rechamber (your $0.10 worth)
« on: March 20, 2008, 05:57:52 AM »
I just bought an extra 223 Remington barrel. This is a 22" regular contour barrel with an extractor. I am thinking of having it
re-chambered. I would like to go to a caliber that I can use factory ammo with. (I don't hand load.) What caliber and which gunsmith would you recommend.

About the only thing I can think of that you can't just buy from H&R would be a 220 Swift.  Larry

When ya decide on cambering go to Wayne York. He's a great guy to do business with and he is great with Handi's. He did my 350 Jacob and I had him add one of his Muzzel Brakes. Excellent job at a fair price. He also did the chamber on my .218 Bee. You'll be happy ya went to him. JMHO - F50

You could try .22-250.  I don't know if that is a standard H&R caliber.  I think that the best thing would be to trade for a different caliber, or sell it and get another caliber from H&R.   That way you are not limited to what a .223 can be changed into.  It would also cost less than a rechamber job would.

The 22-250 is a factory offering in several configurations, the 220, 225 and 222 aren't, Ken's probably already got a 22-250 anyway!! ;D

Yelp, Tim I have the 22-250 and the 220 Swift. I am leaning toward the 225 Winchester. I am just looking to do something different. Trying to see if anyone has any other ideas.....

The 222 Rem Mag looks interesting also. It may take less work....

I had Wayne do a 24" ultra .223 to .220 Swift for me. He is first rate and when I need another one done he will be who I go to for the work!

The only thing additional the 225 would need is a 30-06 extractor, about $10 plus shipping from H&R, should be a drop in. ;)

Tim,

Believe it or not I ended up swapping extractors on the .220, I am using a .243 extractor and it works great, that would be the same as the 30-06/308 extractor I guess.

Even if factory ammo were available, a Handi wouldn't handle it, it's a necked down 378 Weatherby for anyone curious about it, it has a .582" case head, the short mags are "only" .555"!!  :o

One thing to remember is that re-chambering to a swift or some other large capacity case with a fast twist short barrel, is that most of the factory ammo will not be loaded for that type of barrel.  Most swifts are 24 to 26 inches and a 1 in 14 twist, I don't know what the .222 Magnum comes standard as but I bet it is longer than 22 inches.  It will work but will not be like the real thing.  Larry

Go with a .22 CHEEtah or .223 WSSM.  Or why not trade for a less redundant bore?  And choose a rechamber/custom job in a cartridge TOTALLY dissimilar to a .223 Remy, Swift, or any other .224?  OTH, if your barrel was a bull, go for a rechamber/rebore to a .257 Bob or 6mm Remy.

If you must stay with a .224 cartridge, look long and hard at the .22 Bench Rest.
