new lever gun yesterday

Allways wanted a 1886 and never seemed to have the money when one came up at a reasonable price. Did some horse trading with my buddy yesterday and got one of his newer winchesters off of him. Its the win. extra light rifle. Its like new and a beauty. Sure am going to like this gun. If you guys havent shot one just the sounds they make when your working the lever is worth the price of admission!!

I sure want one of those as well Lloyd but so far have never seen one for sale other than one of the shorter barreled ones in the higher grade once many years ago. It was way out of my price range at the time. I'd love to get one of the newer Browning or Winchester branded made in Japan guns with the longer rifle barrel (24" or 26" I think) guns in the standard not fancy grade.

I once bought a Marlin Cowboy in .45-70 but that thing was just way too light for the loads I tried to shoot in it so I traded it off. Back then I was dead set on using the heavier Buffalo Bore type loads and I just wasn't able to deal with the recoil of it. Now had I stayed with black powder level loads I think me and it could have gotten along well together. I could live with one of the Marlin guns these days I think but an 1886 is what I've really been wanting. I don't think the lighter one like you got tho is what I want as my shoulder appreciates all the weight it can get when shooting the .45-70.

I think the guy you're referring to runs a shop doesn't he? Does he have any more of the 1886s in stock?

bill this is called the extra light rifle but its far from extra light. it weights substantialy more then my 26 inch cowboy did. This one is a standard rifle and was converted back to half cock and has a pachmayer pad fitted to it and its a cream put to shoot with 420s at 16oo fps. Its as comfortable as my ported guide gun was with the same bullet at 1300.

Bill i got this from my best friend not my friend thats a dealer. 86s are pretty rare on the shelf up here.

OK Lloyd thanks. I knew you had a buddy who runs a shop and thought maybe that's where you got it. It seems those 1886s are rare everywhere. You'd think Browning/Winchester or someone would take a hint from that. Even back when that run of them was made years ago I saw only that one on the shelf of any of the shops around here. I suppose I could make do with the lighter Marlin Cowboy since these days I'd use only BP level loads in one but I still like the looks of the 1886 much better. Some day perhaps I'll run across one in a shop or at a gunshow at a decent price.

bill i like the marlins too. Ive got a slug of them. But theres just something about that mechancal clanking that goes on itside of an 86. Its as timeless as the sound of cocking a colt!

Darn you Lloyd!  I love those '86's!  Several years ago I hesitated when a local shop had one of the new production light weights in and when I went back to get it it was G-O-N-E!  Never seen another one for sale...  I did see a rifle version at a show last month but they wanted something way over 1K for it.

richard i really love this gun. Problem is everytime i look at it i see a little 18 inch octagon 50 alaskan sitting there. thank God the checkbook and the credit card are about empty right now or it would be in route to ben forkin

Be still my heart!     But then, I mean... what would you do with that 50?  Except maybe look at it, hold it, rub the wood lovingly, through it to your shoulder occasionally, admire the bluing...  Sayyyyyy!  Sounds like you should give ol' Doug Turnbull a call!  And he's got a new cartridge out!  475 I believe!  Think color case hardening!

i kind of have to chuckle at the l light carbine lable. its 22 inch and far from light!
