On the double dovetail base for Encore rifle, how do you use or install the big set screw at the front end of the base? Do you screw the brass colored point down on the barrel or not?

I called Burris on this one. Snug the brass part of the screw down against the barrel with the hex on top. The one I purchased had the screw in the base upside down.

I returned the Carbine Base I had. I was using a Leupold scope and there was no way to get the eye relief correct without hitting the rings. The Pistol Base is so short that the eye relief can only be gotten if the turret is against the front ring and then it is not perfect.

Mine is still wearing the Weaver base that I was wanting to replace. At least I can get the scope where it needs to go with the Weaver, but I am still not a fan of the Weaver Bases.

Thanks Bullseye for the info. Mine came upside down also. Not real happy screwing it down onto my barrel but Im kinda stuck with it for now. I will try something else on my next barrel. Thanks again

Hey guys, I was actually contemplating this base for my 209X50, but it sounds like it may not be the best idea. I'm kind of in the dark on what you're talking about with the set screw. Is there any way one of you could post a picture of what this base looks like? I really like the DD bases on my Winchester rifle, but would like to see the Encore version before buying. I have an extra set of Signature DD rings, and was hoping to put them to use on my ML, but...

Question: Have any of you solve the burris ring/scope turret problem by using the Burris extension rings either the front or rear? Looks like they might solve some problems.

Yes the extension rings would solve the problem. I just did not feel like spending the money on them. My gun has a Weaver base on it which I do not like, but I guess I like well enough not to spend the extra money on extension rings.

The Burris Carbine base extends out past the taper in the barrel. It basically turns into a cantalever mount on the front. Burris says the screw against the barrel is to keep the mount from bending if the gun is dropped.

Ah, I see the light (between the base and the barrel). I know it's a logistic nightmare for manufacturers, but I'd like to see more of them fill that void with a fitted base.

Do you know if the Burris base for the muzzleloader has the same gap? Seems to me that it should be a pretty snug fit.

I would not think there would be much of a gap on the muzzleloader, but there would probably still be some. A Weaver base on the muzzleloader almost fits, but there is still a small gap at the front.

Even the Burris Handgun Mounts have a small gap at the front and the rings are so close together that there is not much adjustability.

I would love for someone to make a base that fits correctly. Is the taper even the same on all the barrels? Another idea is that T/C should have never created this problem. All they had to do was the start the taper later. All that would be lost is the gun would be a little heavier and it is so light anyway that not to many people would probably complain.

Can you tell that this whole issue is my biggest complaint about the Encore?

I agree. I'd love to see the barrel remain full diameter long enough to allow for a tight-fitting, full-lenght base. Maybe VVCG and the other custom barrel/base makers bribed T/C to build their barrels that way to create a good niche market :-D . Is there some kind of conspiracy here?

Looks like I'll have to try the base for the muzzleloader then. Anybody know how well their stainless finishes matches that on a T/C?

I did not like the Weaver bases much myself until I tried the new Warne Maxima weaver type base with Millet angle-lock rings - this is a steel base, it adds a bit of weight and just feels rock solid. It still has the small gap at the front where the barrel tapers but it is a 1/4 inch thick plate of steel that would be much less prone to bending than the old aluminum ones. I am not 100% sold on the Millet rings yet, I have been wanting to try a set of the Maxima rings shown in the Fox Ridge Outfitters catalog.

Another Encore base I have been wanting to try is the see-thru base made by Ironsighter, it says it is made for the Encore black powder barrel but the screw holes are the same as far as I know, might be handy on a short rifle barrel in the woods where you might want to be able to use the iron sights.
