6.8 SPC ammunition makers/availability
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:52:13 PM »
I've been thinking about a Mini 14 in 6.8 SPC and I really don't know much more than ballistics on this round.  I know that but are the larger ammunition manufactureres making much of this ammo. and if so, does anyone know whether or not this caliber has much chance at being around for awhile?  Thanks.

I bought a Contender carbine barrel for my daughter to deer hunt with last year. I have still to this day NEVER seen a factory round for this caliber. I bought the dies and brass for the barrel when I ordered the barrel. I have seen it for sale on the internet sites, but it is more expensive than .223 ammo. A lot more expensive. There are only a couple of ammo makers making it.

If you're a handloader, it's really no big deal, but if you're stuck buying factory ammo, I would recommend you PASS, and get the mini in .223 instead.

6.8 REM SPC ammo is readily available thru internet providers - Midway USA is about the easiest to order from. This is a link to the other major ammo maker besides Hornady - http://www.ssarmory.com/6.8ammunitionsales.aspx  Skip the Remington ammo as Hornady is a supporter of the 6.8 in addition to Silver State. If you reload you can load the 130's  for 30/30 hunting  performance. Sierra makes a 90 grain varmit bullet as does Hornady in 110 VAMX's. Go to ARFCOM for more info on reloading.

I have a 6.8 SPC AR
68forums.com is the place to get the info you need
I don't think the mini is ideal due to it's slower rate of twist
if you already have an AR, just get a 6.8SPC upper, if not, then they start getting kind of up there in price and the mini is a cheaper option

there's a lot of people hunting with them, deer, hogs, even bear, etc...
