7X57 Mauser
« on: July 12, 2003, 08:13:47 PM »
I am contemplating adding a rifle barrel to my TC Encore 209X50, probably to do a little Deer hunting. I am thinking about getting a 7X57 mauser or 7X57 Mauser Imp. I would appreciate any info or experience on this project. I will reload my own ammo for this rifle.

The 7x57 or AI would be a good (excellent), choice for the Encore. I personally haven't used the round, YET!. But have hunted next to them, on several ocassions. I've been impressed by 7x57's performance in the field. I do have a fair amount experience with AI's, and most of my custom barrels are AI'd. I do it mostly to reduce case trimming. The added velocity is  a plus, if needed. But out to 300 yds, generally not. The one thing I've found most curious, is my AI's are accurate, whether loaded mild or hot. It's only a guess and my opinion, that the less tapered body, grips the chamber walls more quickly and maybe tighter.? Resulting in more inherent accuracy.?  I just ordered a 7mm barrel for my Encore, but I went a little bit the other way. Having it chambered in a 7mmBRM. Basically a maximized 7-30 Waters, with the body taper blown out , and shoulder moved forward. I'm still going to have a #1 RSI in a 7x57 soon though!!!  :D On

I had a 7X57 in a Ruger bolt several years ago and it was absolutely deadly on deer with 140 gr NPs. Don't know why I let that one go?

I just traded for a Bullberry barrel for my Encore, not in 7x57 but the necked down version called the 257 Roberts, 24" heavy sporter.  I think I got the better end of the deal.  I took it out last weekend and shot it for the first time.  The first three shots at 100 yards grouped into just over 2/3 inch.  Needless to say I'm very happy with it's performance.  I was shooting a Nosler 85 gr B-tip at about 3000 fps.  I'm going to take it to Rosebud in a couple of weeks and shoot a few p'dogs with it.  It should make an excellent antelope/whitetail rifle with a little heavier bullets.
The other barrel that I got from the same guy was a 26" heavy varmint 22-250 made by VVCG (along with a set of laminated VVCG wood).  This one shoots even better!  I'm getting spoiled by these custom barrels.  I'm always thinking about what other ones I need to add.  LOL

Big Tom -

Any reason the 280 Rem would not be just as good or better - just a 30-06 necked down to 7 mm?  Factory ammo is readily available for this cartridge, as are reloading components.  They were made as a TC factory barrel when the Encore first came out and there is a new one available right here http://pages.prodigy.net/mktcdyksman/encbarls or a used one available here http://www.edstc.com/edstc/24blueenc.html .  I have done business on several occastions with both - never a problem.

I have had a few .280s, very nice caliber. I'm a little leery of the recoil of a .280 on an Encore frame. Longwinters posted on this forum that his new 7mm/08 barrel kicked harder than a 7mm mag.
The 7X57 has the lowest  recoil energy I've ever experienced per its ballistic potential.
