measuring chamber length

as i posted below i just recieved an old iver johnson champion 12 ga, and i was trying to figure out the chamber length.  Does 3 inch sound about right, i measured to where the forcing cone starts and its 3 inches to the end of the barrel.  Is this a correct measurement

Most likely a 2.75 chamber you have there---as the shell needs extra room to open up.

Using a 3in shell in there will most likely lead to excessive pressure.

im sry i typed that a little backward, i measured from the end of the forcing cone to the end of the barrel and it is 3 inches.  Does that make any difference?  I mean a 3 inch shell is actually smaller than 3 inches right, but it opens up to 3 inches correct.  Well anyway i just wanted to clear that up, 3 inches from the end of the forcing cone to the end of the chamber

A 2.75 shell opens up to 3in.

A 3in shell opens up to 3.25---or there abouts.

gotcha thank you for the help, works out perfect still.  I can keep all the same size shells.  My Mossberg model 195 also shoots 2 3/4

Not really the stated length is the length of the fired not the unfired shell.

well i just measured my mossberg model 195 that is marked 2 3/4"  and i got the same measurement on that chamber as well so 2 3/4' must be the shell to use, unless the mossberg was modified which i doubt, it sat for many many years
