really interested in single actions..

i have gotten the sudden urge to get a single action.  i have been a traditional bowhunter and have not really been into guns accept for my shotguns and rimfires.  i am not interested in a gun for hunting as i really enjoy bowhunting, but for fun shooting targets and plinking.  i am interested in the 45 colt and am looking at the taurus guacho .  would this be a good starter?  what would a fair price be for a new one?  http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=487&category=Revolver here it is and i would like some opinions.  thanks for any help!

  Might want to do a bit of research on the gaucho models first.  Seems there were some that had trouble with them.  Enough so that the model has now been - as I understand - discontinued.  A number of lg dealers that sell nationally have had them on clearance prices which is another good indicatuion of them being dropped.  The Taurus site isn't updated for 2008 models compeltely so older stuff is still listed as well.
  I must say that for the money there's not really a better bang for buck, especially for longevity than the Ruger models.

you can get a used ruger so cheap or a new one for that matter I would never ever spend the money for a different brand..

I've got a Taurus Gaucho I've had for a couple of years. I absolutely love it. Not one problem out of this revolver. It does shoot high but I'm under the impression that's the way the original Colts were. Made to blow a man off a horse at 75 yds. not print cloverleafs. I can hit a coffee can at 50 yds. dualist with my black powder loads very often if I do my part. For a plinker and back up gun mine's great. For a hunting gun pick A Ruger with adj. sights.

I now have three Gaucho's and am well pleased with them.  Excellent gun for the money.  I have heard of a couple of folks who were having misfires.  According to my gunsmith, those have come from improper 'trigger jobs' which allow the hammer to drop before the transfer bar gets all the way up.  I have found the trigger to be very good and not in need of any extra attention.  It's true that Gaucho's are being discontinued and priced accordingly.  That makes them excellent buys, especially with Taurus' lifetime warranty.  I feel Taurus' problem was more the fact than they came out with 5 1/2" barrels first, then 7 1/2".  Then they wonder why sales are slow.  When they finally did come out with the 4 3/4" barrel, those were snapped up as fast as they hit the shelves.  Hmmmm.  Let's bring the most popular barrel length out almost a year and a half after introduction and wonder why sales are slow?  Ruger was also slow to introduce the shorter barrel New Vaquero and I always wonder why.  That's my theory only but a trip through Jay's yesterday showed all of the short barreled models sold out and only 5 1/2" and 7 1/2" ones left on the shelves.     
I would also look at the Heritage Big Bore.  That seems to be an excellent gun for the money.  44 Man

Do not assume Taurus life time warranty has any meaning. Their customer service is the only thing worst than their quality. Your chances of actually getting a bad one fixed by them is pretty slim based on my personal experience with them.

I only owned one Taurus pistol, and their Warranty Dept. in Miami had possession of it for a longer period of time ,than I did. And never could repair it. NO MORE TAURUS PRODUCTS FOR ME ! I have 3 Blackhawks, and just bought a Cimarron Arms Thunderer in 45 COLT, And it also is a fine handgun.

  If you want traditional, I would say Cimmaron. If money is no problem, U.S.Firearms. An old three screw Ruger is hard to beat. It is somewhere in between.

I have been pleased with my Uberti 1873 Cattleman. Various versions are available and can be found for $250-$300. They have the 4 click Colt action and are, for me, a reliable Colt SAA replica.

I would definitely recommend the Ruger over the Taurus.  I have two Black Hawks and a Single Six.  Love all three of them.  Never any problem from any of them.

I've had a problem with every Taurus I've owned. "Life time warranty" means you can keep sending them back for the rest of your life. They don't care. I no longer own any, and never will again. I've got eleven Rugers and one on order. Can't remember a single problem with any of them except for a Mk. II .22 LR that was extremely picky on what it would shoot. Many guys I know who shoot CAS started out with Ruger, bought smaller, lighter Uberti guns, and then went back to their Rugers for their strength and dependability. I really am glad that 44 Man and others haven't had the problems with their Taurus guns that some of us have had. It's really a crap shoot these days regarding quality. By far, I'd go Ruger.

guys i like rugers as much as anyone and have a bunch of them but am the first to admit that ive probably had more problems with rugers then any gun. There quality control in my opinion sucks. But a guy has to keep in mind what your paying for one. there are hell of a gun for what they sell them for. Most of there quality issues can be taken care of by a home gunsmith. Nice thing about a ruger is at least they do stand behind there products. At least up to a point. Ive seen where they too have told people there pos gun was withint specs. they will not guarantee accuracy. At least unless its an obvoious problem causing the trouble. There was a time when ruger stood behind there guns with a no questions asked warantee but those days are over. I guess its understandable. People think if they buy a gun its should come with an unconditional warantee for life and that it should be perfect and nothing should ever break on it. A guy will pay 30000 for a new truck and have problems with it and think its normal. they will warantee it for a while and then your on your own. A gun is a mechanical device just like a car or a motorcycle or a microwave. How is it we seem  to expect perfection and a lifetime no questions warantee with gun when any other manufacturer would laugh at you if you asked for one. I dont care what brand of gun you buy whether its a ruger a tarus or even a freedom arms. If you shoot it enough something will break on it. Most of the manufactures will bend over backwards to help you but dont expect it for free.
