ProHunter Barrel Accuracy issue
« on: March 25, 2008, 04:14:10 PM »
I read alot of threads on how to enhance accuracy in an Encore and but I think I figured out why my 300WM barrel won't shoot consistently even with my hand loads.

I don't have a bore scope but I shined a light in the bore on the crown end and there are awful tool marks as far as I can see. I believe this one is going back to T/C.

Well, when you call T\C the first thing they are going to ask you is what factory ammo you have shot from the gun. They won't give you any credit for handload's even if your name was Elmer Keith. So, if you have shot some factory ammo, make sure you have the brand and the group size it shot. If you havn't shot any factory ammo....go buy some and send it down range.

Yes sir the first 20 rounds down this tube were 180gr Federal. I could get close to 3" groups with those babies. With my handloads I was getting inconsistent groups of .7" to 2" groups.

Yeah they already told me that they wanted me to try 180gr Federal, Winchester or Remington ammunition. But with those awful tool marks in that barrel I can see why the groups are iractic.

Considering that the ProHunter is their flagship rifle it sure is disappointing to hear about the poor quality control.

I look at it like this......Any company out there who manufactures a product is going to let a certain percentage of that product go out the door with a defect in it. I don't care if it's a gun barrel, frame, trigger, car, or a washer\dryer combo. The important matter is are they going to fix it and are they going to fix it in a timely and courteous manner? If that's going to happen, then it's probably a solid company with a good product worth buying. But if your going to get a run-a-round about the product, and they are not going to be fair and up front with you, then that's a whole different matter.

Well we'll see how it turns out. Turn around time is 8 to 10 weeks.

You guessed wrong. I own a new ProHunter and just bought a second PH barrel for it. I have also owned several Contender pistols including a JD Jones custom TC.

I'm not particularly thrilled with companies that produce sub-par products at full boat prices and even less thrilled with poor quality customer service. Lately I have found T/C's customer service to be abysmal. Possibly related to S&W's take-over of T/C. Who knows?

My mistake. I've got 2 contenders and a PH. I've called T\C for some questions on my smoothbore 12 ga., but they  answered my questions. But then, I've not had any problems with my T\C's.

The  more I think about it 8 to 10 weeks is a ridiculously long time. They will receive the barrel in 2 days and it will take a couple months before someone will have 10 minutes to take a look at it and test fire it.

Really that is just about unacceptable. I don't think I would tolerate it in any other line of business I would deal with or any other product.

I had a Stealth Cam that the flash stopped working on and I sent it in and they had it back to me in 10 days. I have sent a scope or two back to Bushnell for various reasons and have received the repaired scope or replacement with in a couple of weeks.

8 to 10 weeks, they either have way too many barrels being returned or have just a hand full of smiths looking at them.

I think I will call them back tomorrow and ask if they will just return my barrel if they can't honor their warranty any quicker. I can always use the barrel for a baseball bat this spring.

That's a great idea.
