It is Al Bores fault.  One walked several hundred miles down the Dalton a few years back.  So probably just lost.

So what if it is?  This proves the bears are smarter than the greenies.  If the bear's habitat changes, the bears have the ability and intelligence to adapt.  Environmental wackos won't adapt until they get their way and the heat goes off...then it will all be about the menace of global cooling.

I got through a few opinions until I gave up, sickened by how stupid people are.

I thought it was a pretty cut and dry deal.  If a polar bear has a reason to be around a village, you kill it.  Otherwise, it will kill you.  Pretty simple really.

Now... out bear hunting with an AR-15... I'm not too sure about.  Maybe with a .50 conversion.... but not with a large magazine.

I agree Corbanzo.  The comments to the  Anch Daily News article shows how far removed many urban Alaskans can be from village Alaska. Makes me a bit sad at the lack of understanding. Up in that country this time of year a few folks are out hunting every day for something to eat. Its the way they live. And with the cost of living shooting up I think I see more folks getting out now here in the Bristol Bay area. In some ways its a shame they shot it if it was far from town. But given that it found the town its likely it would come back and be a serious hazard to the people.

Yeah, being as it was away from town.. .that is going to draw a lot of sceptics.  But being as it was feeding on carcasses of animals that they were processing at or near town (I don't know exactly, just as described in the article) the bear now sees that as a food source, making it quite a danger because it has a reason to return.

Next thing we know Polar Bears will adapt like the Snow Shoe Hare and Ptarmigan, watch out then.

As for hunting with an AR-15.  The man used what he had.  Best kind of gun to use, one he knows and shoots well.

...and how is ADF&G going to prosecute anyone for killing a polar bear (as opposed to a griz) 250 miles from salt water?  When they set out, those hunters weren't hunting for a polar bear.  Polar bears have never been known to wander this far before.

It's probably not ADF&G they have to worry about......but the USF&WS can be real butt-heads.

If I recall, can't natives kill polar bears under the marine mammal protection act?  Fort Yukon may be Athabaskan instead of Inuit, but they still are natives (except for Don Young that is).

Don't matter, it was in defense of life period.  Standard procedure in the bush is if you find a bear out in the winter, kill it ASAP.  For a bear to be out in the winter means it is either sick, starving, injured, or all three.  Anyway it is going to be looking for a fast meal.  We are not at the top of the food chain, we are just another pray animal to them.  Therefore for the protection of the village they have had the policy for centuries, of hunting down and killing the winter bears quickly, before it comes back to the village and picks up a kid or two.  That is just what happened here.  Only difference is that after bear was found and killed they realized it was not a Grizzly, but a Polar Bear.  Doubt most of the people in that village had ever seen a Polar Bear before.  They had no reason to believe it was a Polar Bear.  If it had been seen the residents would have just thought it was an Albino Grizzly, or it was just covered with frost.

What was done was justified and prudent.  As for the AR-15, any gun beats no gun.  He used what he had and it worked.
