IMR 7828 in .25-06 or .308

Some years ago The American Rifleman magazine had an article on IMR 7828  (I have no idea about the date--more than 15 years ago) in which they loudly touted the positive qualities of the powder in a variety of calibers.  I tried it in my Ruger 1-V .25-06 with some success, but it liked 4350 better.  The load listed for  the .25-06 was 55 gr. of 7828 under a   117  gr. Sierra SBT.  This load produced 52100 c.u.p. and a muzzle velocity of  3130.  I recently found my can of 7828 buried in the back of my cabinet and started looking for .25-06 loads or possibly .308 loads in my newer manuals as a way to make use of the product.   I was unable to find any at all.  Did this powder drop off the map or have I just not found it in my manuals?  Moosie

The old 7828 has been replaced with 7828 SSC ( super short cut ) making it better for powder measurer's , and a better overall burn - smaller peices , check Hodgdons web site they list loads for the 25/06 , and i'll bet many more .

Thanks, Stimpy, but I have been there and am rather disappointed.  Apparently this powder did not fulfill its initial promise as it is recommended in relatively few calibers and limited bullet weights.  I was hoping for some successful uses in .25-06 or .308 for the old 7828 powder that I have just found in the back of my cabinet.

I'd be surprised if you found any .308 Win loads calling for IMR7828ssc.  It's a bit slow for that cartridge.  I would expect there'd be some published .25-06 loads.  It's preferred in magnums; like the weatherby rounds, 7mm Rem Mag, the ultra mags, etc.

check Hodgdons web site they list loads for the 25/06 , and i'll bet many more .

I realize Hodgdon owns or markets IMR powders, but do they list IMR loads on their website?

Hodgdon's list loads for their powder along with IMR and Winchester also .

You should be able to find some data for the 25/06 but the 308 i don't think so , too small of a case for this powder's speed .

it is important to follow the recommended primer suggested.   i use it for the 270 and have to use a magnum primer or i get bad results.  with the magnum primer,  outstanding.

Like other have said already, this ain't gonna work for the 308.

7828 works well in the 25/06, as does H1000. I used them both with 100gr bullets and larger. My best load was H1000 and a 120gr HP Sierra ProHunter.
