.45 ACP Small Primers
« on: March 29, 2008, 11:14:00 AM »
I just bought a quantity of Speer .45 ACP once fired brass cases and to my amazement they are made with small primer pockets.  Not undersized, but made for SMALL primers.  I guess I'll use small pistol primers.  But, should I use regulars or magnums and should I change my load any?  I currently use 4.2 gr. of bullseye pushing a 230 grain lead round nose bullet with large pistol primers.

(PS - pain in the neck now having to segregarte the cases)

Yeah, it's a pain to have two different primer sizes in the same caliber case. I ran into that some years ago with some brass I picked up on the range. I separated them from my other cases and loaded them single stage. I used them at a match and left the cases on the ground. It REALLY boogers things up if they happen to get mixed in with LP primed brass in a progressive loader!! If you load on a single stage it's not so much of a problem, but I would call Speer and ask if the cases you have can be returned and replaced with the ones using the LPP. Use the standard primer with your load. Bullseye is easy to light off.

Just noticed "Once Fired" you're probably stuck with the cases.

i heard about it and i have seen some. i guess it haas something to do with indoor ranges.
i did load a few no problem shooting them. just a real hassle ,so i separate out the small primer pockets, figure when i'm hard pressed i can use them. dan

I believe it was Winchester "Win Clean" cases I saw with the SPP. Seems like they also had very large flash holes as well.
