Question about Duke traps verses Sleepy Creek traps
« on: July 14, 2003, 04:23:52 AM »
:D Hi:

I got a few questions about Duke coilspring traps verses Sleepy Creek coilspring traps.

1. I have the Sleepy Creek #2 double longspring traps. They are built heavy, but the jawspread in my opinion is not wide enough for the Eastern Coyote. Does anyone here have the Sleepy Creek 1 3/4 coilspring traps?

2. How does the Sleepy Creek 1 3/4 coilspring trap compare to the Duke 1 3/4 coilspring trap?

3. How does the Duke 1 3/4 offset coilspring trap compare to the Sleepy Creek 1 3/4 offset coilspring trap?

4. I noticed that there is not much of a difference in the jawspread between the Duke 1 3/4 offset coilspring trap & the Duke #2 offset coilspring trap, is the #2 offset Duke better than the #1 3/4 offset for the Eastern Coyote and the occasional red fox?

                                                                        Thanks,

                                                                 coyote trapper1928

Coyote, most number 2 longsprings are just a #1 1/2 with a second spring--you are correct, that would not be a suitable coyote trap. As far as sleepy creek versus Duke, the one thing you must remember, the dukes are around $30.00 or so a dozen cheaper.I just got in some of the new Duke # 1 3/4 and #2 offsets--I will take a look this evening and give you some measurements on them.  Tom

I've never caught coyotes in anything but #2 longsprings, myself. they work fine on coyotes in this area, anyway. I use #11 on fox and coon at dirthole sets, and have held plenty of coyotes by several toes in those little traps, too. The #2 is too big for coons or fox at dryland sets, but is just right for coyotes. I've even caught a few by both front feet in them, couple by the front wrist joint, and plenty of hind leg catches too at post sets. Trap placement is a little more critical, but once you get a system down they work great. A lot easier on accidental dog catches, too. Something that can't alwasy be said for bigger models. They are also a heck of a lot cheaper than traditional coyote trap sizes, so an occasional theft loss isn't as pricey to the bottom line. I like the sleepy creek #2 because it is even a little wider in jawspread than an old victor, blake & lamb, or a northwoods model. I like the adjustable pans, too. On those older models I just add booster springs, center swiveling arrangements and a really tight throw on the pan around a 1/16" is great, 1/8" is liveable, but anything more is too far for the pan to travel. This trap is a good sized trap for cats, too.
