Blowback?
« on: March 30, 2008, 07:46:18 AM »
Great site here, I am really enjoying and making use of all the info on NEF and H&R rifles.
I recently purchased an Ultra Varmint in .223 and a Handi in 25-06.

An issue with the 25-06: I have only fired 20 rds through this rifle and I noticed a carbon
build up on the underside of my scope. I have read through the FAQ's and the Handi Basics
but have not been able to find anything on this matter. Also did a search and couldn't find
anything there either. I'm assuming this is not normal as my .223 has no such build up on it.
I checked the barrel to breech fit and it locked up tight on a .002" feeler guage:could not pull
it out.
I am loading my own ammo: 45 grains of  Varget behind 50 gr V-Max bullets.
Thoughts?

Welcome Jeff! You must mean 75gr Vmax, Hornady doesn't make a 50gr .257" Vmax. Does it shoot good? How's the brass look, specifically, the primer?

You're right of course ;D
Must have been thinking 'bout my .223 and writing  about the 25-06. ::)
The gun is shooting good, just got it lined up at 25 yards. Haven't done 100 yet as
I had to return the scope I had on it and get another one.
Brass and primer look good, no signs of over pressure.
That's the first thing I checked for when I noticed the carbon deposit.
Like I mentioned barrel to breech fit is good, so what the heck?

I am fairly new to reloading so here are a couple of pics for your expert eye:

The scope wasn't mounted on a muzzleloader at one time, was it??  ???

The cases look great, I've had start loads smoke the cases bad on a 22-250 Ultra, and I've seen blown primers really soot up the headstamp, yours don't look like either, defect in the barrel?

Those cases are way too pretty to be the problem. I'm thinking that it's residual smoke and crap collecting on the scope after the breech is opened, while there's still smoke in the barrel.

Then it stands to reason every break open single shot would have carbon build up on their scopes. 8)
Anyone else notice this on their single shots?

I've never noticed it on any H&R, my Encore or the Optima Elite. :-\

I get a little on a red dot that's mounted just about flush with the breech......especially with black powder or lubed cast bullets.
My only other guess is a gas leak at one of the scope mount screws, and that's a horrible thought!

Well, I took the gun out again today and put 20 rounds through it.
No carbon marks on the scope at all.
All I can figure is that the breech was not closed perfectly on a previous
shot?

Gun shot well, 2 inch group at 100 yds. Hopefully it will get better as I
have only fired 40 rounds total so far. ;D
