Favorite turkey choke

  Just wanted to know what chokes people have had the best luck with you read about them in their adds and such just wanted some first hand exsperience. I just picked up a jelly head to try. Also what choke shotshell combinations have worked well for people as well.

Chokes are almost completely hype.  I'm appalled at what people are paying for them these days... and more than 1.  When you're ready to kill turkeys get whatever super-full type choke fits your gun.  Then buy a box of the hottest loads you can buy in 5s or 6s.  I like hevi-shot.  Then shoot 1 or 2 to make sure the barrel is straight and you know how to aim.  Any additional time you spend should be on scouting. 

Don't misunderstand what I'm saying.  It's not that there is no difference in chokes.  There is a VERY small difference.  It will not make the difference in you killing a turkey.  But because magazines and TV shows are hyping all these chokes people think they are important and that some are better than others.  A choke is a piece of metal that is one diameter at one end and a smaller diameter at the other end.  Thats it.  It would be like arguing over which wheel weight balanced your tire better or who makes the best staple.

Thanks dukkillr  I just wanted to know others opinions I had a turkey extra full .687 and wanted to try a super full .660 to see the difference I also bought a improved cylinder and a modified as well just for trap and also to possibly use the gun for ducks as well. Any way Just wanted to know what the accual difference is between all the designs and if they mattered. Thanks again.

I have a Remington 870 express super mag 3.5" with a 23" vent rib barrel all camo thumb hole stock.

My standard turkey gun is an 870 with a 23" barrel and 3 1/2" chamber.  When I bought it I thought it would also work as a back up duck gun.  It won't.  It's balanced so poorly and kicks so badly that it's useless for anything other than turkeys.  Even with light 2 3/4" loads the gun jumps, target acquisition is very slow, and the pump stroke is extremely long. 

I shoot the tighter full choke that it came with.

Well as far as using the gun for ducks all my friends use either a 870 or a bps for all their duck hunting and one has about 23 different shotguns don't know why but he always uses his bps with a 23" barrel. They all knock down alot of ducks with them. An lately I've been grabbing my 870 turkey gun to go trap shooting with over my winchester 101 and I've shot my highest scores with the turkey gun. Everyone also told me that the thumbhole stock would suck for trap shooting and now they are thinking about buying a thumbhole for their own guns.  As far as the choke that came with the gun it is a extra full and well it doesn't like #6's and  it likes 5 well I haven't try'd 4's. I just bought the jelly head to try a tighter choke a .660 over the .687 to see the results. The only reason why I started this post is to see what others have had luck with.  As far as saying the gun can't do it well, to each their own.

I'm also of the belief that chokes are way over hyped. The whole point of all the ultra tight chokes is to extend your range
beyond 40 yards. I have no desire to take a shot on a turkey head at that range anyway. I prefer the challenge of trying to call them in
to less than 25 yards. To each their own, though. Some people like to take long shots. I'll be hunting with a fixed mod choke 20 gauge this season.

I am using the TruGlow Gobble stopper .665 choke.   It works fine for me with no complaints.  I also try and get the Turkeys within 20 yards, BUT sometime they just don't make it.  It is nice knowing you can reach out there if need be.

Jkump what #shot, weight payload and length shell do you use with the truglo?

I am using Winchester Supreme 3" magnum HV #5 shot (want to say 1 3/4 once).  Nothing fancy, just your basic stuff from Winchester (bought at Wally world).  I know people that prefer #4 shot and then there is a group that swears by #6 shot so I just split the difference.  My hunting buddy also uses #5 shot and he has been turkey hunting alot long than I.  GOOD pattern at 25 yards I average around 20 pellets in the kill zone on targets.

Maybe it is just been my experience, but all of my shots are from 15-30 yards, it seems like they just appear out of no where and are in my decoys.  I have to wait for them to move out a little and then they quickly move out of range back into the bush.  I have a 12ga 3" 1187 with xtra full choke and at close range the head is a small target.  I think I will switch back to a modified choke. 
My kid shoots a 20 with mod choke and kills them just fine.  I actually missed one on the first shot last week at about 10 yd.  He was moving around in the decoys and them quickly walked right over to me.  He made me and I knew I had to shoot.  Had to shoot him in the air.
Anyway I agree with the choke hype and think a standard full would work fine.  I mean that the shot goes just as far with open choke and out to 40 yards 1 7/8 oz of shot is a pretty dense pattern.
I really love turkey hunting and shooting them is down the list from finding them and getting a place to hunt.

I shot this one a few years back on opening day of the Kansas season with a superfull 3 1/2" at about 10 yards.

Hey guys thanks again for all the replys. Where I hunt turkeys they tend to always hang out at about fifty yards and I've always kinda have had a knack for shooting things and game far away (out to 450yards). I'm also trying to figure out what is truly ethical shot as far as max distance. Plus like I stated earlier in the thread I'm still getting my self up to snuff on what works and what doesn't with shotguns. I still haven't gotten to the range to try the jellyhead I bought on a turkey target at 40 to see what it'll do and compare it to the other chokes I have got.
