How about this: when your floor caves in because of the weight of your collection.

National Geographics? Floor? I recall that someone calculated how long it would take for the lower 48 United States to sink under the weight of National Geographics.  The theory was that since nobody ever throws them out, they would continue to pile up until eventually collapse the continent.  As I recall, it'll be a while.

I have one firearm for each purpose In my life, 1 deer rifle (30.06), 1 muzzleloader (two more weeks to hunt annually) 1 duty pistol, one off-duty pistol, 1 backup/ankle revolver, 1 duty shotdun and 1 AR-15 for home defense/plinking/varmint. If I take up gamebirds, I'll buy a red label. If I go after bigger critters than white tail I'll get a 300 Win Mag or 7mm. mag. I think more than one or two guns for any particular purpose is impractical and expensive but it's a free country and we can own all we wish! I may buy that special marine grade mossberg for a shower/bathtub defense gun and that .454 Casull single action for protecting my barbecue grill!

I suppose if USGS starts including maps a declination for magnetic North around your house because of the affect the iron has on compasses - that might be an indicator.   :D

Enough is defined as:
"occurring in such quantity, quality, or scope as to fully meet demands, needs, or expectations"
That is kinda like the meaning of "extra"
The day I have any "extra" guns is the day I will have some "extra" money.
I have never had the experience of either!!
My aim is to hit what I am shooting at!

I used my GI bill in the 80's on gunsmithing school at Lassen College in Susanville Ca. it took a bunch of different guns for all of the different classes.  I still have almost all of them, plus all that I have collected since then.  I must admit that I have forgot that I even had some of them.
I was cleaning and wiping down rifles a while back,  I had several old 92's that I used for different projects in school.  When I picked two of them up, they seemed to have a little extra metal in front of the action.  They are both take down's.  I know I bought them cheap and used while at Lassen College, but I didn't remember them being take down models.
The really sad part is that I refinished and reblued them both screwing up their value.  The 1892's didn't have much value then, they were just old lever guns and were cheap and plentiful around the gunsmithing shop.
There are more than a few projects that I started and never finished collecting dust on my workbench.  I'm going to have some down time this spring, my goal is to finish as many of them as I can.

A very wise man told me that there are only two things that matter in the end, those whom you love, and those who love you.  For it is only that love that you can take with you.
BUT, while I'm still here, I'll enjoy my family, my toys, and the mountains that I love.

When do yo uhave enough guns?
« Reply #43 on: April 08, 2004, 01:54:21 AM »
You have enough guns when you start planning a 31-30 wildcat to plug the gaping hole in performance between your 30-30 and your 32 Special.

You have enough guns when you buy a 44 Special to put on the shelf as a reserve for the 44 Special you bought to put on the shelf as a reserve in case the 44 Special you're actually shooting ever wears out.

You have enough guns when you go to the gun shop and ask for four or five boxes of ammo and when you name any of the cartridges the dealer doesn't know what the hell you're talking about.

To paraphrase someone: You can't be too rich
You can't be too good looking
You can't have too many guns
There are only three questions one must answer:
                                     Do I like it?
                                     Do I want it?
                                     Can I afford it?

This is one of those insoluble conundrums, there really is no right answer.  And if I ever decide I have enough guns, I'll let you know.

But don't hold your breath!

How do you know when do you have enough gun

Well my take on this is a bit different.

I don't look at it from a standpoint of how many is too many.   I look at it from the outlook of what guns do I think I need.

IMHO everyone needs to have something along these lines.

  .22 Rifle

  .22 pistol/revolver

   "deer" caliber rifle

   Good Shotgun

good Pistol/revolver in at least .357

Anything above and betond this is gravy.   But still nice to have.

That is all any person really "needs" to own in a firearm.  This allows for pretty much any situation a gun could be needed for in general as well as allowing for some fun in the process.  Anything else and it is extra.

That is what I am basing my goal for my gun collection on.

Am I getting there?  Nope, already screwed it up when I bought myself a second .22 rifle for my 31st birthday this year.  A sweet little Marlin 60 in stainless.

The guns I hope to own eventually.

  A good .22 rifle     DONE
  A good .22 Revolver
A .357 Magnum Revolver   DONE  (And I love this GP100)
A Good Lever Action Pistol Caliber rifle
A good "Hunting" Rifle  (Leaning towards a nice Marlin 45/70 Guide Gun here)
A Good Single Shot Shotgun  (my first time shooting was a nice Breech load 16 Gauge, I would love to find another one of those)
A good repeating shotgun, most likely a pump action.
A .410 Shotgun   (every man needs a .410 they are just too much fun)

So I am looking to consider my collection "complete" after 8 guns.  Anything more than that and I honestly could consider it wasted money.

Would I be  happy with those 8 guns?  Definitely.
Would I like to have more?  Honestly.  No.  I like to shoot guns but I also don't like the idea of buying things for the sheer sake of buying them to never use them.  All of my guns I buy are bought with the express purpose of being used as they were designed.  Not to be safe queens.

Not that this is a bad thing, and those of you who have the money to afford a sweet collection of rare or old hard to find guns, I salute you for helping to preserve our national heritage by preserving those firearms that may have otherwise found thier way into a new minivan's engine block or something.

The important thing is that we keep shooting and fighting for the right to own and USE our guns.  Not just own them and never be able to do anything but polish them.

410?
« Reply #52 on: December 21, 2004, 02:04:08 AM »
Make that .410 a 28 gauge!  A 28 gauge will do anything a 410 will only better.  The main reason for the 410's existance is as a handicap in skeet.  The 28 gauge is too good to break ties.

:cb2: My wife lets me enjoy my hobby. I have my "squirrel fund"— a few bucks I squirrel away each month, sort of an allowance, that goes for guns and shootin' supplies. When I save up enough, I get a new toy, or a case of ammo that I like, etc., etc., etc. She doesn't mind because, as she tells her friends, I don't drink, gamble, I'm faithful to her, and really don't spend any of the hard earned cash on anything else. It's a hobby I enjoy, and if I never got another gun in my life, I'd still have more than enough guns. Believe it or not, I am getting pretty close to having all I want. (Until someone comes out with something new that I just gotta have, but lately the new stuff hasn't really thrilled me.) Then I guess the squirrel fund will go for guitars and camera equipment! (Naw, then it will go for a Dillon reloader, pretty holsters, and custom work on the guns I already have!)

Is it really Christian and proper to use the words "gun" and "enough" in the same sentence?

I'm not sure I'll ever have "enough".  I love them and collect them like functional art. I figure as long as I buy them right, keep their condition up, I can always sell them off and get all/most of my investment back. Given that I don't drink, smoke, gamble , golf  or buy $30,000 motorcylcles /boats , I figure I'm in better shape than folks I know who drop allot of their $ on the above.

I find it real hard to stop buying even though I have been collecting guns for 40 years. My first was a nylon 66, 410, now I have 40 more to add to my collection. Its really addicting. Steve 48
