They been advertising that one for a long time, even pre-Remington; made in Russia I believe.  Has anyone ever seen one in the flesh... uh, wood, or know of a dealer who actually has one in stock?

Hi All,

Have not seen the SxS's but Baikal do import the O/U version here and a gunsmith I know has one on test in 30-06 just now and so far it's perfomance had impressed him. He says the wood is much better than normally found on their shotguns I may need to look at them if I get the chance as a double rifle has always been on the wish list but I would prefer a SxS.

Now tell me that wouldn't be a conversation piece.
I still like the idea of a little skinny guy in a loin cloth to carry it for you.  :D

Hi All,
Have not seen the SxS's but Baikal ...

Baikal!  That's the name!  I'm so darn old I CRS anymore...
The stocks I've seen on everyone of their shotguns had the aesthetics of a club.  Whenever I think about how much I'd like one of the dbl rifles my next thought is that I'd have to have it restocked!

Are they going to make it in magnum calibers?

Not all Baikal's have poor stocks, I have a Model 27 O/U 12 bore which has a good stock on it, not the best figured wood of course but it fits and does the job it's designed to do very well. I picked up this shotgun off a friend a few years back to shoot a few Geese. According to Lewis who is reviewing the O/U rifle the stock on this is better than the shotguns.

I'll reserve judgment until I actually see and hold one of the sxs's!  But then I'd probably immediately buy it no matter what the wood looks like Or caliber for that matter.   ;D  Interesting how they "approached" the regulation problem.

Just my humble opinion. But I would prefer the 45-7- in a sxs and the 30-06 in a ou.The reason is that the 06 would be used at longer ranges than the 45-70 and from what I have read the ou is easier to regulate for windage and the sxs is easier to adjust for elevation. So shooting at a longer range i would rather after to make elevation compensation for the different barrels then for windage.

Yea I know my buddy had one on order until they told him they weren't for sail anymore. I figure they weren't being made anymore.

Some of the more mature (chronologically) members may remember a combination outfit that Browning marketed for a time (in the 1970s?).  It was a two barrel, over and under set with 20 ga. and 30-06 barrels in a hard case.

I forget the price but at the time it seemed expensive.  I expect such a set would be genuinely expensive if it became available nowadays.

I saw a Baikal double not long ago at DJ's Sport Shop in Bothell, WA. I don't recall the price but it seems like it was under $1k. Workmanship was a little rough.

I got to shoot a little Browning O/U '06 several years ago when I worked on an indoor range. I had left Special Forces about a year before that, and I was still pretty quick with an AR. I could double tap a soft-drink can at 25 yards with it as fast as I could with the black rifle. Apparently all that talk about a double being fast on the second shot is true.

Cheapest "decent" double rifle in 30-06 would be the O/U Valmet 412...  They really shoot good, better than many bolt action rifles...  The 412's are great guns!!

I found a new gunshop real close to me and went to check it out.  They had a Baikal double in 30/06.  First one I have been able to get my hands on!   :o  I really wish they had a 45/70, but if they had I might be in a little trouble with mama...  ;)

I must say I was pleasantly supprised.  Naturally that club they call a stock would have to go, but with a little work...  One thing that bothered me however was the regulation of the barrels.  I was sure I read somewhere that there were provisions to adjust the regulation at the tip end of the barrels.  I didn't see anything.  Was I mistaken?   ???

I read the below yesterday on another forum...  It's not the first problem i've head about them...

  DM

Well I picked up my Rem SPR 22 30-06 on Thursday. I spent almost four hours on Friday fitting the forend to the receiver. The fit where the curve of the forend meets the receiverr was so tight that the latch would not close.I lapped the radius until it fit. The ejector was so tight that the action had to be opened over my knee and forced closed.I cleaned rust out of hole where the ejector rod goes and freed it up some.
I went to the range and used Remington ammo 180gr Corelocks. After 2 shoots the action was hard to open and the primers were set back. I tried Federal Classic 180gr Hi Shock SP. The results were the same except the primer set back was not as bad.I believe this is because Fed pimers are harder than Rem.When I got home and inspected the cases more throughly I noticed that the shoulders had moved forward.
I tried a no go gauge in both chambers and the rifle closes on gauge. I believe the cambers are long.
I am going to call Remington on Monday. I will post more when I hear from them.
Dave

Doesn't supprise me at all.  The Baikal I was talking about was, of course, the Remington.  I only got to handle it in the shop, but also noticed that it was hard to open.  I figured all such as that can be worked on, but headspace problems!?   :o  That's another story!

I think he should have stamped "imp" after the 30-06 on the bbls...  Then backed his fl. die out a couple turns and reloaded for it...  lol   Some guys pay good money to have a chamber lengthened...   ;D

Dixxie,
As far as I know they are not making it in a "magnum"  but they did offer it in 9.3X74R.  If ever a round should be called a magnum this is one.  It throws a 286 grain bullet at about 2400 feet per second and is just under 375 H&H in both power and caliber.  .365 in english and 3500 foot pounds.  Hornady is making ammo for it as well as many european companies like Norma.  .375 H&H is around 4300 foot pounds with a 300 grain bullet.  338 win mag is 3900 with a 250 grain bullet.
As far as the ugly stock go.  There are many companies out there that would love to have some of your $ and restock it in anything you can think of.  I like the plain stocks.  Gives it that working gun look rather than a safe queen.  What I wish they would fo is work on the machining of the metal and have real screws or allen screws rather than the Russian function over form bolts and screws they do have.

Hmmmm I can only think that the Spartans are made to a special order and price for Remington  :( as the Baikal's I have had dealings with and owned had/have none of those problems. Currently I have 4 baikal shotguns, two being 12 bore 2 3/4" single barrels and one being a 20 bore 3" the other is a model 27 O/U 12 bore SSTE. In fact my first ever shotgun was a Baikal 12 bore SxS DTNE. The other Baikal of course that I own is the MH18 single barrel rifle in 222 Rem, yes I had to work on the trigger to lighten it, but none had been overtight to open or close but none are loose either. The modern ones have not as good wood as the older ones as one of the SB 12 bore had much better wood including shape and fit but it does require a re-finsh due to being in a fire, the gunshop it was in caught fire and so shows some water damage, later ones the stocks are not fitted so well and on my MH18 I re-shaped it high-lighting the shield by the action and shaved it down so the top of the stock was level with the metal work of the action.

One of the 30-06 double owners floating around the net that also had problems, bought his "before" Rem. got into the picture, so i don't think that is the case...

Just because you can build a double shotgun, doesn't mean you can build a double rifle...  It's a different animal altogether...

Yep it is but the Russians have been doing them for a long time. Just because we in the west have not seen them does not mean that they did not make them. They make an awful lot that we never get to see including some really high end stuff. Have not heard from Lewis who was testing a double baikal in 30-06 so I had better phone him during the week I need to speak to him anyway just have not found the time to phone him  :-[.

Well, if they have been doing it so long and know what they are doing, you'd think they would quit building junk!

I think you can get away with building a halfassed shot gun, but when it comes to a DR, you need to get things spot on.

How do I start this.  Yes the Russian guns are utilitarian at best.  They are not a Merkel or Rigby but are a double rifle able to shoot minute of deer at 75 yards.  These little russin guns are the way most of us will be able to afford a side by side rifle.  The base model in the merkel is $4,500 about 6 times as much as this little rifle.  No it will not print like the Remington M700 that costs the same but it is a neat little brush gun and you can play Capstick, Hemmingway or they guy Tarzan always has to save from the quicksand and mentally shoot a Cape Buckalo on your next wooded hunt or the next wild boar hunt.  Sorry no clever way to make it a lion or Rhino.  Maybe I could.  The Wild Boarnoserous?  Heck if my friend and I can go over to another friends fields and shoot rabits like they are Antelope and see who has picked the bigest set of ears.  You can turn a Deer into a cape buffalo with your russian side by side rifle.

These factories will build what you order. If you order the cheapest that's what you get. Personally I have not yet seen a Baikal Double rifle as I know of no one fairly near that stocks them. Perhaps sometime this summer we will take a trip to York and then I can call into York guns who import them now, but that will depend on if I can talk Mum & Dad in taking the trip, and if they are up to it. With the fuel prices it's not something we or I can do just to take a look. Having to think carefully about any road trips now and in fact had to cancel my trip down to the Pheonix Meeting at Bisley due to the fuel prices. This would be an all day trip and neither Mum or Dad are in good health so I am their carer.
