Tired of Semi Autos Jamming
« on: April 03, 2008, 06:57:50 PM »
Been using friends semi autos and tired of them jamming several times every magazine. 22 bolt actions don't jam but kinda boring due to the slow fire rate. Friends just got Henry Lever 22 so hopefully less jamming and faster shooting meaning more fun. I kinda like old fashioned actions such as single action revolvers but again is new to lever actions. I like the old west feel and look, nostalgic. The only semi auto that friends have that does not jam is a ruger but only with certain ammo.

Dunno what kinda guns your friends own or what ammo they use but my experience with semiauto rimfires is not like that. For the most part they seem about as reliable in feeding and firing as any other action type to me. You do need to be a bit more circumspect in cleaning the actions of them than with bolt or lever rifles but that's about it. When the action gets cruded up they will begin to jam but that usually doesn't happen for several hundred rounds or not in the guns I've owned.

Rimfire rounds are kinda dirty rounds really and do leave a fair bit of carbon build up on the action which needs to be removed from time to time. A quick squirt of BC Gun Scrubber will remove it and then a bit of light lube in appropriate places is about all the maintenace they seen to require.

I've never had any jams with any of my .22 autos, in over thirty years - and that includes Rugers, Remingtons, Marlins, and Winchesters - except for the occasional dud round in the bulk ammo of these last few years.

The "Marlins" were 6 well-used Model 60's I bought for $50 each, for the youngsters shoot, at my gun club, in the -80's. (I was the club rangemaster)

You don't have to go crazy, but as pointed out above, they need to be flushed out every now & then.

Autos are also sensitive to magazine defects, though - as in dented tubes or nicked/bent feed lips & weakened/broken springs.

my 10/22 used to jam about once every couple hundred rounds when it was new.  Since it wore in i haven't had any trouble with it.....

I had one Marlin 60 that no one could get to shoot reliably.  After several trips to the gun shop, and a couple back to Marlin and still the jam-o-matic I traded it for a 10-22 and never looked back.  There must have been something major wrong with that one.  Now I have several 10-22s, all modified, and a Nylon 66 that just shoot and shoot and shoot.

Am I doing something wrong?? Friend had a remington 597 when new was kinda reliable but after about 500 rounds it jammed about every 10 shots or so. It was accurate though. He then got 10/22 carbine and it would jam once in a while. Added a green mountain barrell and now it misfires about every other mag and when it does the round gets stuck and needs to cycle bolt about 10 times to extract. The GM barrell probably has seen at least 1000 rounds. IS this due to the tighter chamber for more accuracy?? Friend cleans his stuff really carefully, i know because i help him do it. Should he try to reinstall the green mountain barrell to see if that helps?? I see people saying that their 10/22's are reliable and wondering what were doing wrong. I know this isnt a lever action topic but it kinda went that way so.....

I can't speak for the Remington, but my 10 22s both have custom barrels with match chambers.  One is a Green Mountain.  I have never had a misfire with them.

They have modified trigger groups, bolt buffers, etc.  And they are reliable.

Put the Hi Point down and slowly back away

Let me tell ya, I have a High Point 9mm.  And unless you "limp wrist it" it NEVER jams, and gives me 3/4" groups at 15yds with anything I feed it.  Best $150 I ever spent on any gun.

I've heard other complain about jamming, and when I expalin about limp wristing, the issue goes away.  It's a totally recoil based ejection and needs to be supported.

The "limp-wristing", Handirifle was alluding to above, in reference to handguns, also applies in it's own way to semi-auto rifles in that they need to recoil against something stout in order for the action to cycle properly.
That means pulling them back into solid contact with the shoulder, and not letting them "float" - even a little.
Some rifles are also very ammunition sensitive, and just because some ammo brand(s) work well for others doesn't mean your gun(s) will like it/them.  (I like eating fried liver & eggplant casserole, but a lot of others don't - do you ?)

BTW - The 597 owner should be thankful he got that many rounds w/o any probs.  From the feedback I've seen elsewhere, they've been very problematical rifles.

I dont know much about the high point handguns and probably never will as i guess im admitinly a little to much of a handgun snob to own one but i picked up a highpoint 40 carbine a while back and this thing will run ANYTHING AND NEVER JAMS. Its sure ugly but id trust my life to it.
