Holster for 4 5/8" Vaquero - Non Western Style ???
« on: April 04, 2008, 10:53:06 AM »
Hi Guys,

I am looking for a good belt holster for my 4 5/8" Vaquero.  This is a holster to wear while fishing, hunting and hiking.  I don't want a traditional style open top western holster but rather a good belt holster that is secure.  I prefer to have some sort of thumbsnap closure on the top.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Greg

I use a Mitch Rosen "5JR" for my single actions as I don't care for the western style either.  It's perfectly made, outstanding quality and offers great retention while still allowing a smooth easy draw.

Why not a synthetic like those Uncle Mike's and others sell?

Synthetic (nylon) and a single action, especially a Vaquero???  That's either blasphemous or just down right illegal isn't it?

I have one made by Simply Rugged.  It is well made and was pretty reasonable.  If you are interested I will get some pictures and figure out how to post them.

I use a Full Flap holster that I bought for my 1858 Rem, cap and ball pistol.  I put my 4 5/8 pistol in it, marked it, cut it down some, stitched the end closed with some dental floss, and it works great for the climate we have here in western Washington (rain, rain, rain, and then........rain),  it didn't cost much, it completely protects and secures my new Vaquero with that full flap holster.  I still plan to get a nice holster from DeSantis for BBQ's as they say.

;D You do give up some speed, but you gain alot of protection from things that might gouge a nice set of grips.

I also went with Simplyrugged for an all around holster for the single action,  I'm happy with it, and it was a fair price.

I have been using Bob Mernickle holsters for years now and highly recommend them.

I have a Mernicle holster as well in a shoulder rig. El Paso Saddlery is another good one, reasonably priced.

I'll put in another plug for Rob at Simply Rugged.  His work is outstanding for the money and his designs are comfortable and innovative.

For security I carry mine IWB in a Milt Sparks Summer Special. I also like the TLA Hi Rider by Blocker leather.

I make holsters and this is what I use. The belt loop unsnaps so it can be fastened on the bar of my treestand when hunting. I also make a bandolier sling it attaches to so it can be worn on my belt or as a bandolier and taken off without undoing my belt or removing the bandolier sling.

30 WCF, (nice handle by the way!) that's one beautiful holster!  I have always wanted to do things like that, I guess now would be a good time to start.  What weight leather do you use?  And what basic tools do I need to get started?  I have a hand awl stitcher, but I also have a friend that would run a holster or two through his machine.  Your work is excellent!  44 Man

Very nice work there 30WCF, same question as 44man as I have a Ruger SBH .44 mag in 4 5/8ths for cross draw carry.

Even though I set my rig up for our Montana back country carry with Uncle Mikes Sidekick along with my wilderness belt and 2 six round cartridge holders on a slide, having nice leather is something we also like to have.

For some reason I cant get those last two pictures to come out clear. You may have to print them to see the details.

If you try your own make a pattern of your gun using thin cardboard like shirt boxes or you can lay your gun in the crease of a file folder and fold it around your gun and trace it to get a pattern.

I just picked me up a large book that has all these outlines and shows the how to do it right for $12.99  I'm gonna have to modify a 7.5" holster for my 4 5/8ths though.

Montanan,

I would suggest making it long enough to fit a 5 1/2, that way it will work for other guns and they look too stubby when their that short. Thats my opinion anyway and lot of holsters including custom makers make them to fit 4 5/8 and 5 1/2. They kinda hang better when just a little longer too.

Amen on making it to fit 5 1/2" guns!  I used to think I only wanted holsters that are an exact fit.  I have several holsters for a 4", 4 5/8" and for a custom 5" gun.  but things change and now I have a couple 4 5/8" gun and the 5" and several 5 1/2" guns and I am scrambling for holsters for them!  And no, a 5 1/2" will not fit into the custom Geo Lawrence 5" 120 that I have, darn!  So now everything I buy is for 5 1/2" guns reguardless of what I intend to put in them.  44 Man.
My fine Lawrence, Marnickle, and El Paso Saddllery holsters will only fit these guns!

30WCF that is a point well taken.

30WCF simply mentioned that the holster he likes for this purpose is one of the ones he makes -- and I think it is a thing of beauty. Is that a violation of the GBO rules?
