Customizing my SRH

    I am thinking of sending my SRH w/a 9.5 inch barrel to Mag-na-port for the following:

    1. Shorten the barrel to 8 3/8 inches
    2. Remove front sight and leave it off
    3. Do the trigger/action job (I was going to have this done anyway somewhere)
    4. Clean the warning off the barrel
    5. Do their satin finish over the whole gun

    Any thoughts on this?  Am I doing something foolish?  Any feed back is welcome.

   Are you doing a foolish thing??? Ask your wife.  ;D Just be aware that any gun smith work you do on a gun is money you`ll never get back. If you plan on keeping the gun and useing it  ::) maybe money well spent.

Hey DGrig, I had David Clements customize my SRH and he pointed out something to me that I didn't know. The firing pin in my SRH was rounded like a ball peen hammer on the back side, the side that makes contact with the transfer bar. David pulled the transfer bar and it already had an indention from the firing pin, with more shooting it would only get worse and could eventually lead to misfires due to shorter travel of the firing pin.
I had only fired the gun about 200 times before I took it to David and he recommended installing a firing pin from a single action, these are flat on the back side, and replacing the transfer bar. I told him to definitely change them out, it was only a small cost compared to the work I was having done and well worth it to me.

Slufoot, that's good information to know, thanks for the post.

DGrig, I sent mine in and had the same things done as you are thinking except after they shortened the barrel I had them screw on a muzzle brake and put the front sight back on. Everything they did was top notch, the trigger is really sweet now, that hideous waqrning is gone and with the muzzle brake it is the mildest recoiling 44 I've ever shot.

The way I see it is, it's your gun and if these items will make you a happy camper, go for it! You've not listed anything unreasonable.

If this is a gun that you will keep for the long haul then I would package that thing up and send it off...If you plan on selling it anytime in the near future, I would not dump a ton of cash on it.  I like what you have planned for it...I was considering a 9.5" 454 SRH and Magnaporting it was one of the things that I was going to look in to...But, my plans have changed for now...

Thanks for the input.  I am still wrestling with whether to send it off or not.  It is a gun I want to hang on to for hunting and target.  It fits me well and the mass of the gun makes is tolerable on recoil.

Since we are on the subject of customizing the SRH with respect to porting (or adding a brake as GRIMJIM did), I have a question for those of you more knowledgeable than I...

I have heard many times that a muzzle brake or porting reduces recoil, but increases muzzle blast.  Similarly, depending on powder charge, shortening a barrel can also increase muzzle blast.  How do those effects contrast?  Since the brake/ports direct gases out more, will they generate more blast than a shorter barrel?

Or to be clearer...  If you took GRIMJIM's gun and removed the muzzle brake, clearly the recoil would increase, but would the muzzle blast decrease without the brake, increase because the barrel is shorter, or stay about the same??

That's a very interesting question. I didn't notice more of a muzzle blast but it had been a while since I shot it. I think for it to be a perceptible amount of difference you would have to shoot an unaltered one and one with a brake back to back to really see the difference. They gave me a thread protector ring incase I want to shoot it without the brake installed. Maybe I'll try that next time I get a chance to go shooting.

Still interested in getting more feed back on my customizing plans listed above.  I am actually not interested in porting my SRH.  Even with full-power hunting rounds it is manageable, and for my high-volume practice I use Rainer plated bullets in front of 10gr of Unique that I can happily shoot all day.  Has anyone done their gun with Mag na port's satin finish?  How is it?

I say go for it.  Nothing like having a one of a kind gun.  I had a Ruger Redhawk that I sent out to Jack Huntington in California.  He did some excellent work on my gun.  I had the gun cut down to 4 inches, action job, matte finish, jeweled hammer/trigger, had a Freedom Arms front sight installed.  Great little gun that I carry while hiking here in Colorado. 

I've been wanting to install a set of custom grips, but I don't want them to get banged up while in the woods so I stuck with the Pachmyer.

Sorry about wandering off topic.
 

1. Shorten the barrel to 8 3/8 inches
I had the barrel shortened to 8 inches before installing the brake to maintain the original length after the brake was installed.

2. Remove front sight and leave it off
They removed the front sight and reinstalled it behind the brake.

3. Do the trigger/action job (I was going to have this done anyway somewhere)
trigger/action job also numbered the cylinders and recut the forcing cone.

4. Clean the warning off the barrel
This was a big decision for me as it was money spent only on aesthetics and had no effect on the function of the gun. After it was done it was totally worth it.

5. Do their satin finish over the whole gun
This is the one I didn't have done as I want to have it bead blasted but leave some parts polished.

All in all everything they did was top notch. Machining/fit is excellent, trigger is fantastic. Feels way smoother in double action. Looks a lot cleaner without the safety warning. I think if I hadn't had the brake installed I would like the recessed target crown on the end of the barrel and even though I didn't get the satin finish on my gun I do like the way it looks.

Also they told me it would take six to eight weeks to be finished as it was getting close to hunting season but it came in after only two weeks. I was pleasantly surprised by that.

I had my SBH .44 Magna ported, To me it made the muzzle blast terrible, I put a different barrel back on it. But most people seen happy with it.
