dyeing wood for laminations
« on: April 04, 2008, 04:43:15 PM »
I have no idea as to the right place to post this, but since I intend to use this application for a laminated bow riser, does anyone know anything about how to dye thin wood strips thru for laminating? I'm guessing that you soak it in a mineral spirit based dye until it's soaked thru and then dry? Anybody ever tried it?

I have used leather dyes for wood before. Think I got them from Tandy.

Haven't thought about leather dye, that's a great idea. Do you soak your wood in it until its saturated throughout?

No, I use it for making knife handles. I put the stain on with a cloth, very heavily, but not soaked thru.
Not sure about the gluing needed for laminating. Don't think the dye would hurt, but never tried it.
I put several clear coats of poly on them and they shine purty.

Thanks torpedoman. I've got some thin 2"maple strips, and I'm going to try soaking it in the dye and see what happens. The thing with laminated wood is the color has to go all the way thru or else when you go to cut and sand you lose your color with the outer parts of the wood. Maybe the laminated wood is stained or dyed after final sanding? If so, then this would be  a tedious task with multi colors!!
