Just remember that a citizen can ship a rifle thru the USPS anywhere to have it worked on or customized. The weapon can then be returned directly to him. There is no need of a FFL accept for the gunsmith. A Winchester 52 is a fairly pricey weapon and you might want to consider a restoration company such as Turnbull Restorations.. They can reproduce the original blue/polish and while not cheap do a great job..

I'm down here from Canada visiting a friend and he has his fathers old 52 Winchester sporter.  It's a beautiful rifle but due to the way it has been stored, the barrel is pitted on the outside.  I almost wept when I saw it.  The serial number is 57792B.  It may have to be rebarreled but I am certainly no gunsmith.  He would like to give the rifle to his son, so I am kind of spurring him on to get the rifle checked out and stop the deterioration of a fine rifle.  I am not sure how much he would be willing to put into the rifle but I have to push him a bit.

That's gonna be one lucky boy!! A 52 sporter is certainly worth putting some money into. A good smith may be able to save the original barrel or perhaps find/make a decent replacement.. Turnbull is an excellent choice to contact for such a restoration. I'm not pushing him particularly but I know the quality of his work. Prices are not cheap but are reasonable for such work and a 52 sporter sure deserves the best..
