Mound Master #1 Out weighs Mound Master #2
« on: April 06, 2008, 05:45:29 AM »
I went out the other day and set up a beaver damage job for a guy. I have trapped the site before but this time there was very little sign so I didn't expect much.
I set up four Castor mound 330 sets just like Bog says to do them. I  even lure them every other set like Bog says, first using Mound Master #1 then the next set Mound Master #2. So what do I find using just 4 sets two with Mound Master #1 and two with Mound Master #2 ??????

Mound Master #1 out weighs Mound Master #2 by 13 pounds.

Mound master #1  51lb beaver

Mound Master #2   38lb beaver

Mound Master #1 clearly the heavy weight LOL!

Thanks Tom

Side note
I dang near lost the bigger neck caught beaver and the trap. I had the trap staked down with a 18" 1/2" rebar T iron and thought I was good. That big guy managed even though head caught to pull the T-iron and move everything 4 ft away. The water came up a foot since I set the trap and I poked around a bit before finding the trapped beaver. No matter what you think you just got to tie beaver traps down darn good.

I haven't had a chance to tell the land owner I took the pair out, I know he is out of town.
The biggest beaver is a female and the smaller one a male.
It's a 15 mile drive one way so I'm not going back unless he has more problems. I'm not getting paid to trap them just do it for trapping privileges in the fall.
I know he will have problems again at some time just because of the location. I was there before in 2005 and took out a whole colony of 6.
I wish the water hadn't come up and covered the smaller beaver, he never moved the trap. I could have taken a picture so the young guys that come on the board could have seen how simple the sets were.  Just a low spot on the bank, a hand full of mud with a dab of your lure, 330 out front with 1/4 of the trap above the water and some simple stick fencing. Bam!
Easy as Mud Pie! LOL!

Good job Mac,  i keep telling people catching yotes in cables is just as simple as catching bvr when you know the basics...  every trapper comes back  once they catch a couple professing. (gee that wasnt bad at all)..
