Have any of you shot these 2 bullets?
« on: April 06, 2008, 12:16:39 PM »
I will be loading some cartridges soon and have been looking at the bullets I would like to try. I do know my Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243 loves factory 58 grain Hornady VMAX. I can shoot under an inch at 300 yards with this factory ammo. I think I might want to try these two bullets as well. The first is. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=739290 These are the 55 grain Balistic Silvertips with the Molly coating. So far all I have really shot out this rifle is Molly coated bullets and it seems to like them a lot. Here is the second bullet I like. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=715290 The ones I like are just like these only Molly coated. I am leaning toward the later because of the higher BC and will buck the wind a little better. Have any of you shot either of these bullets and how do you like them? Thanks for any information. Dale

I've only shot the BST's in .257 but they did shoot very well , don't see why they should not do well in a .243 , just remember that if you shoot moly bullets you will need to clean your bore good before you shoot non-moly or you will have a mess .  ;)

Stimpy. Thanks. I have read that before. You can not switch between Molly coated bullets and regular bullets without cleaning the bore real well. The reason being it will affect accuracy. 99.9% of the bullets this rifle has seen so far have been Molly coated. I really seems to like them and with a 243 being such a barrel burner ( I will be loading on the hot side ) I figure I can get more rounds down the tube before I wear it out. I have heard others say that the Molly coating causes barrels to trap moisture and the bore will rust. I am not real concerned with this because I clean and oil the bore after every few outings. I also make sure I clean and oil the bore if it will sit for sometime. Thanks Dale

I think your logic may be backward Dale.  A few hundred hot loads might erode the barrel more so than a few 1000 standard velocity loads.  If you want to keep the accurate barrel you now have (and I would certainly think it is worth keeping), back away from the hottest loads.  Go for accuracy rather than velocity.

The throat of the barrel is were the wear is most critical, and too much heat is the enemy.

I see your point clearly. What do you consider hot? The factory Hornady 58 grain has a MV of 3,750 FPS. I would plan to load along those lines because that is what my rifle likes. Thanks Dale

What is it you plan to do with this load, I've been a 6mm fan all my life and love hornady bullet's. I have found the 65 gr. vmax shot at those velocities comes apart real bad on impact. The slower you load it the better it holds together.

Hey Dale,  The Combined Tech.  Ballistic Silvertips may shoot great in your rifle.  However, if you are looking for a Moly coated bullet this ain't it.  The BST is coated with a "Moly Free" coating called Lubalox.

Throat erosion is a function of unburnt or partially burnt powder going through the throat area. This causes friction that heats the barrel. The more heat the barrel gets, the easier it is for the powder to erode the steel in this area. That is why if you over heat a barrel, you will accelerate the erosion. The higher the velocity of the powder and large volumes of unburnt powder is what does a barrel in. That is why an "over bore" case will erode the throat faster than one that is not over bore. A 243 will erode the throat faster than a 308, because you are forcing powder through a smaller hole at higher velocity, even though they have the same case volume. The more unburnt powder volume going through a small hole will cause more friction (heat build up) than a lower volume of powder going through the same hole. Powder velocity is also a function of this phenomena. Powder friction is the enemy of throats. Heat is a by-product of this friction. One powder will do better than another, as far as throat erosion is concerned, but they all cause throat erosion. A 22 rim fire has little powder if any going at relatively slow velocity through the throat area. A 220 Swift on the other hand has lots of unburnt powder going at much higher velocity through the same size hole. That is why a 22 rim fire barrel will last a long, long time with out being "shot out". A 220 Swift shooter has to be careful about over heating a barrel and prematurely shooting it out. Even if he is careful, he will still shoot it out much quicker than say a 222 Remington barrel, because of the volume and velocity of the powder going through the throat area. A 220 Swift shooter is talking about hundreds of rounds before throat erosion ruins his barrel, on the other hand a 222 Remington shooter is talking thousands of rounds before he has to replace a barrel. I could go on and on about this, but this is it in a nut shell.

Good point!!!!!!! Don't fix it if is not broke so to speak. I will be using the 58 grain Vmax for sure but I kind of want a little heaver bullet along the lines of the 70 Grain because of the higher BC. It would be better on longer shots due to the wind. Oh yea I will be using this for groundhogs. Dale
